The Fountain Ring is a silver ring that comes in two models: Butterfly and Spider. When water hits the Butterfly ring, an elegant water membrane and two antennae appear on the back of your hand. On the other hand, pouring water into the Spider ring creates an abdomen, antennae, and eight long streams of water that fly in all directions. Whether you're washing your hands, drawing a bath, or playing in the pool, the Fountain Ring adds a touch of whimsy and elegance to your everyday activities.
What sets the Fountain Ring apart is its realization technology. Atelier OPA Co., Ltd. utilized rapid prototyping techniques to develop the 3D model, which is then printed in wax. The wax model is cast in silver and meticulously polished by skilled artisans. The rings are also available with various metal plating options, including rhodium, gold, rose gold, gray, and black. For an extra touch of luxury, you can choose to have a jewel, such as a diamond, blue diamond, or ruby, fastened to the center of the surface. Additionally, laser engraving of text is available for the inside of the ring.
Butterfly Small Ring: height 1.1 cm, depth 2.8 cm, width 2.2 cm, weight 12 g. Butterfly Regular Ring: height 1.1 cm, depth 3.3 cm, width 2.5 cm, weight 13 g. The Fountain Ring project was launched on August 19, 2015, on a Japanese crowdfunding site called Motion Gallery. It quickly gained popularity and received coverage from well-known news portals and TV programs. By October 16, it had achieved 115% of its funding goal with 38 collectors. Afterward, the rings were made available for purchase on Atelier OPA Co., Ltd.'s website. The Fountain Ring has become not only a playful jewelry item but also a romantic gift for birthdays, engagements, and weddings in Japan and other countries.
The inspiration for the Fountain Ring came from Atelier OPA Co., Ltd.'s observation of the phenomenon that occurs when tap water strikes the surface of a spoon in the kitchen. The water creates a thin and transparent membrane that resembles a heart, with the spoon handle dividing the water flow. Atelier OPA Co., Ltd. took this concept and designed water membranes in new shapes, such as a butterfly or a spider. The Fountain Ring serves as a reminder of the beauty, wonder, and importance of water in our lives.
Yuki Sugihara, the artist behind the Fountain Ring, has been researching water membranes since 1994. He has built large temporary fountains 11 times, with the aim of sharing the feeling of being under water with participants. However, in light of the need for energy conservation, water preservation, and sustainable designs, luxury fountains have become outdated. The Fountain Ring offers a personal fountain experience without the need for a pump, emphasizing the importance of water in a modern, charming, and sustainable way.
The Fountain Ring has received several patents and intellectual property rights, including design patents in the USA, EU, and China, as well as a utility model patent in Japan. These patents protect the unique design and innovative features of the Fountain Ring.
Winner of the prestigious A' Design Award in 2016, the Fountain Ring has been recognized for its outstanding creativity, technical characteristics, and innovation. This silver accessory showcases remarkable expertise and artistic skill, evoking positive feelings of amazement and wonder.
