La Goccia: A Fusion of Eastern and Western Design

Hong Wang's Award-Winning Restaurant and Bar Design

La Goccia, a restaurant and bar designed by Hong Wang, is a stunning example of the fusion of Eastern and Western design elements. This innovative project, which won the Golden A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2020, showcases a unique blend of "new-style small wine culture" and "freedom to play casually".

The design of La Goccia was inspired by the origins and connections between Venice and Chengdu. Hong Wang sought to find a resonance point between Eastern and Western bridges with different characteristics and extracted the most basic formation language of "arch". This concept is reflected in the two-story structure of the restaurant, with the first floor focusing on Italian food and the second floor housing a bar.

One of the unique features of La Goccia is its spatial design. To break the limitation in the vertical space, Hong Wang excavated the two-story floor to form a patio, and moved the wine rack behind the bar directly to the second floor, forming a four-story, seven-meter-high wine tower. This wine tower, a closed structure consisting of two "L" shapes and a middle "T" shape, is visible from outside the building, making it a key attraction point.

Technology played a significant role in the realization of La Goccia's design. Mirror stainless steel was used to improve the visual effect of the second floor, and simulation technology was employed to reduce the use of wood. In addition, water plating technology was used to apply copper plating on stainless steel, reducing the cost and achieving the texture and effect of real copper.

The design of La Goccia faced several challenges, particularly with the original building space. The first floor had shallow features, and the initial plan to place the bar in the middle could not be realized. However, by moving the outer wall more than two meters to the south, the designer was able to increase the area by more than twenty square meters, establishing the layout of the central island bar.

La Goccia has become a popular gathering place, attracting a large number of foreigners, especially Italian friends. The Italian consulate has chosen it as a meeting place, and companies like Maserati and Ferrari often participate in activities there. This success is a testament to the authentic Italian dishes and the exclusive agent of Prosecco sparkling wine that La Goccia offers, making Italians who are far away from home feel friendly.

In conclusion, La Goccia is a remarkable example of innovative design that combines elements of Eastern and Western culture. Its unique spatial design, use of technology, and ability to overcome design challenges have earned it a prestigious award and made it a popular destination for locals and foreigners alike. The success of La Goccia demonstrates the power of design to create unique and engaging spaces that resonate with people from diverse cultural backgrounds.
