Eco Park 15: A Modern Tropical Retreat

Reimagining Residential Living with Ken Thong

Inspired by the symbiotic relationship between light and shadow, Ken Thong has transformed Eco Park 15 into a modern tropical oasis that fulfills the aesthetic and functional needs of modern Malaysians. With a focus on open spaces, natural materials, and a resort-like atmosphere, this residential house offers a unique and sophisticated living experience.

Thong's design for Eco Park 15 sets it apart from other residential houses with its modern tropical concept. By removing non-structural walls, the house now boasts an open space layout that allows for an undisturbed flow throughout the ground floor. Large glass panels strategically installed throughout the house illuminate the space with natural light, creating a warm and inviting ambiance.

The use of natural materials such as brick, wood, steel, and cement surfaces adds a rustic quality to the design. Coupled with a cool urban color scheme and clean straight lines, the result is a sophisticated and modern look that is both tasteful and tranquil.

The functionality of the design has also been enhanced through the re-purposing of the tea room, patio, and terrace. These spaces have been transformed to better serve the needs of the residents, providing them with areas for relaxation, entertainment, and connection with the outdoors.

Implementing the design required careful consideration of lighting and space rationalization. The removal of non-structural walls rectified existing lighting issues, while the addition of a 6-panel glass ceiling skylight in the living room brings in abundant natural light. The use of tall glass panels in the living and dining area not only expands the interior visually but also allows residents to enjoy the peaceful garden view.

Eco Park 15 covers an area of 3,600 square feet and features a study area, tea room, living room, dining area, dry kitchen, laundry area, powder room, outdoor wet kitchen, terrace, and patio on the ground floor. The upper level consists of a family area and three bedrooms, with the master bedroom featuring an exposed brick wall and a wooden elevated platform.

The design project for Eco Park 15 started in February 2018 and was completed in 2019. Located in Setia Eco Park, Shah Alam, Selangor, Malaysia, this modern tropical retreat showcases the perfect blend of nature and contemporary living.

Ken Thong's design for Eco Park 15 has been recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2020. This prestigious award celebrates designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to quality of life improvements and making the world a better place.
