Escudellers: A Stunning Renovation in Barcelona's Historic Center

Preserving Tradition and Embracing Innovation

In the heart of Barcelona's historic center, a residential house on Escudellers street has undergone a remarkable transformation. Renowned architect Jofre Roca and his team at Jofre Roca arquitectes have breathed new life into this 1840s building, while paying homage to its rich history and traditional construction techniques.

The Escudellers project stands out for its unique approach to design and its ability to create a seamless connection between the past and the present. The designers have skillfully combined contemporary elements with the building's original features, resulting in a space that is both captivating and functional.

One of the standout features of this renovation is the attention to detail in the restoration of the moldings found throughout the apartment. These intricate designs were meticulously recreated with a contemporary twist, blurring the boundaries between the old and the new. The result is a stunning visual display that appears as if it is sculpted directly onto the walls and ceilings.

Another notable aspect of the Escudellers project is the emphasis on natural light and open spaces. By removing partitions and reconfiguring the layout, the designers have created an open-plan living area that seamlessly integrates the kitchen, dining room, and living room. This not only maximizes natural light but also enhances the sense of spaciousness and flow within the apartment.

In addition to the interior renovations, the team also took great care in preserving and restoring the original iron fittings and hydraulic pavements. These elements, along with the historical patina of the building, add a unique charm and character to the space, further enhancing its overall appeal.

With an area of 104 square meters, the Escudellers renovation is a testament to the power of thoughtful design and meticulous craftsmanship. It is a space that not only embraces the history and traditions of its surroundings but also showcases the possibilities of contemporary living.

The Escudellers project, completed in 2018, has garnered well-deserved recognition in the design world. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2020. This prestigious accolade recognizes the project's outstanding creativity, resourcefulness, and contribution to improving the quality of life.

Escudellers is a true testament to the power of design to transform spaces and create harmonious environments that blend the old with the new. It serves as a reminder that preserving history and embracing innovation can coexist, resulting in spaces that are both visually stunning and functional.
