Lofty abode, curated by designer Andy Wan, is a residential interior design that caters to the passionate booklovers living in New York. The essence of the design lies within its soaring ceiling, spacious environment, and distressed and mysterious sense of raw industrial vibe. Wan's goal was to create a space that is tailor-made for the clients, taking into consideration their individual needs and wants.
What sets this design apart is the meticulous curation of wrought iron, bricks, and wood, which weaves a design language that is chic and modern without looking overly stern and cold. The use of wrought iron-framed glass doors at the entryways accentuates fluidity and transparency, echoing the New York loft-style vibe. The 3.1-meter high ceiling was utilized to build a bookshelf with a wrought iron ladder for easy accessibility, adding a unique touch to the space.
The realization of this design involved the use of stone and rustic slate finishes to dress up the corridor space, further enhancing the lofty and raw design theme from the living area to the rooms. The result is a space that exudes style and harmony, creating a welcoming atmosphere for the homeowners.
To make use of the 3.1 high ceiling, Wan built a 3-level bookshelf above the TV and entertainment systems, catering to the book-lover homeowner. Completing the picture is a black wrought iron ladder added to the setting for easy accessibility. Through close communication with the homeowners, Wan was able to find a balance between aesthetics and practicality, delivering a design that reflects their passion for cosmopolitan lifestyle in a compact space.
The project was completed in 2016 in Hong Kong, and the design was inspired by the homeowners' relocation from New York. Wan's research focused on delivering a design that echoed the principles of New York loft-style vibe, making use of the soaring 3.1m height ceiling and creating a chic and modern corner in the 889 sq.ft abode.
One of the challenges faced in this design was creating a multi-functional room that consisted of a study, a guest bedroom, and a solemn corner for the homeowner's Buddhist practices. Wan successfully incorporated modern finishes while respecting traditions, resulting in a space that seamlessly blends functionality and spirituality.
Lofty abode by Andy Wan is a testament to his creativity and resourcefulness. The design has been recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2018. This award honors designs that showcase technical and creative skills, contributing to quality of life improvements and making the world a better place.
