Flora: A Creative and Imaginative Self-Promotional Design

A Unique Depiction of Gastric Flora as a Blossoming Flower

Flora is a fantasy illustration created by Cynthia Turner, a certified medical illustrator specializing in visual science for the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. This self-promotional work showcases Turner's creativity, artistry, and storytelling skills in the realm of medical illustration.

Flora takes inspiration from the idea that gastric flora, the bacteria found in the digestive tract, could be visualized as blossoming flowers. Turner set out to create a flower composed entirely of the bacteria found in the gut, creating a visual pun that is both intriguing and memorable.

The design process involved extensive research into the common bacteria found in the gut. Turner studied electron micrographs depicting these bacteria and created 3D models of each type. These 3D models were then arranged to construct a flower, with different bacteria representing different parts of the flower.

The flower depicted in Flora consists of petals made from Bacteroidetes, Bifidobacterium, and Enterococcus faecalis. The pistils are represented by Lactobacillus, while the stamens are formed by Enterococcus faecalis. The flower emerges from stalks of Clostridium difficile, and long rod-shaped bacteria, Bacillus cereus, attach to the intestinal epithelium and grow filamentously, eventually sporulating.

The illustration was created using Cinema 4D, a 3D modeling program, and Photoshop on a Mac. The final artwork measures 17.5" x 12" with a resolution of 350 dpi. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring the concept of the gastric flora flower to life.

Flora serves as a testament to Turner's ability to balance creativity and scientific accuracy. The design successfully captures the essence of a flower while remaining recognizable as a composition of bacteria. It is a visual representation of the complex and fascinating world of the human gut microbiome.

Flora was developed over a three-week period at Turner's studio in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, USA. The project required meticulous attention to detail and a deep understanding of both microbiology and artistic techniques.

This unique design has garnered recognition and accolades. Flora was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2020 in the Graphics, Illustration, and Visual Communication Design category. This prestigious award recognizes designs that are well-designed, practical, and innovative, meeting professional and industrial requirements. Flora's integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics contribute to a better world.

Flora is a testament to the power of art and design in communicating complex scientific concepts. Turner's imaginative depiction of gastric flora as a blossoming flower not only showcases her artistic skills but also sparks curiosity and engagement with the intricate world of the human microbiome.
