Black Definition: A Dichotomy of Luxury and Simplicity

George PC Kao's Award-Winning Residential Design Reflects Modern Woman's Dual Nature

The design was born out of extensive discussions with the client, a competent, independent modern woman. The design team aimed to capture her true nature, often hidden behind her professional persona. The result is a design that not only reflects her personality and image but also outlines her thoughts and inner profile, two sides of the same coin.

The unique strength of Black Definition lies in its use of dichotomy to create a residence that is both aesthetically pleasing and functional. The designers used modernistic lines and proportions, large quantities of titanium-plated natural stones, and mineral coatings to create a home that is discreet yet luxuriously affordable. The harmony of colors and proportions enhances the visual effect of the space and showcases the client's distinct personal identity.

The design was realized using titanium-plated natural stones, mineral coatings, imported tiles, steel hardware, and lacquered glass. The site, approximately 234.4 square meters, consists of a foyer, a living room, a dining room, an open kitchen, three bedrooms, and storage. The layout was rearranged to accommodate the client's daily needs and habits, providing more space for hosting friends and enhancing comfort.

The project, completed in November 2019 in Taichung City, Taiwan, was a result of extensive research and design exploration. The design team faced challenges in understanding the client's true desires, which were often hidden and suppressed due to societal expectations. However, through ceaseless communication and a variety of design options, the team was able to set a style for the project.

Black Definition is a testament to the intricate and complex nature of society, where norms, both concrete and intangible, fuel interactions between individuals but also cause people to hide their true emotions. The design team successfully broke out of conventional frames to outline the duality of the client's thoughts and inner profile. The project was awarded the Iron A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2020, a prestigious accolade that recognizes well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements.
