ReRoot: A Renovation Project with Emotional Connection

Preserving Memories and Embracing the Future

Inheriting memories and creating a new living space

In the bustling city of Taipei, a residential house stands as a testament to the owner's childhood memories and the spirit of deferred thoughts and culture. Designed by Maggie Yu and her team, the ReRoot project aims to transform this old space into a modern home that seamlessly blends the past and the future.

When approaching a renovation, designers face the challenge of integrating the new needs and ideas of the occupants with the existing conditions of the old space. ReRoot takes this challenge head-on, using novel design methods to bring out different looks and meanings within the space.

One of the unique aspects of this project is its emotional significance. The owner inherited the apartment from his parents, making it a cherished place filled with loving memories. Preserving this emotional connection became a major focus for the design team.

The realization of the design involved retaining the essence of the old era while incorporating contemporary elements. By integrating the hardware, building materials, air, and light of the home space, the design creates a seamless transition between the past and the present. The structure itself guides the design, emphasizing simplicity, natural elements, and individuality.

The ReRoot project covers an area of 149 square meters and is located in Taipei City. It started in January 2018 and was completed in June 2018.

Overcoming challenges, such as confining electrical and water ducts to a small space below the ceiling, the design successfully creates an open and welcoming space with high ceilings. This allows the new family members to embrace the space and create their own memories.

ReRoot has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2020. This prestigious award acknowledges designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life.

The ReRoot project is a testament to the power of design to preserve memories and create spaces that embrace the future. By seamlessly blending the old and the new, Maggie Yu and her team have transformed this residential house into a place where the past and the present coexist harmoniously.
