Swee Tuan Pang's love for the beach and fascination with the intricate details of corals found on the shores during his childhood served as the inspiration for the Coral teapot. The design is part of the "Coral - Rhythm of the Seas" series, a tribute to the designer's cherished childhood memories. His design philosophy is rooted in the belief that every object has a story to tell, and Coral is no exception.
What sets Coral apart from other teapots is its unique handle design. The single handle allows the teapot to be held from all directions - overhead, left, or right - accommodating the myriad ways different cultures handle a teapot. The indent at the back of the pot allows it to be pinched and lifted, and the lid's design is seamlessly incorporated into the handle, creating a pleasing flow around the entire form.
The Coral teapot is a testament to Swee Tuan Pang's mastery of earthenware. The teapot is coil-constructed, altered, carved, and textured, with a shino glaze finish, and fired at 1200°C. The intricate coral texture on the teapot, a nod to the designer's inspiration, required meticulous work and attention to detail.
Despite the challenges in constructing the handle and achieving the intricate coral texture, Swee Tuan Pang successfully completed the design in just over a month, from January to February 2013. His dedication and skill were recognized when the Coral teapot was awarded Silver in the A' Fine Arts and Art Installation Design Award in 2020. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill.
In conclusion, the Coral teapot by Swee Tuan Pang is more than just a functional item. It is a celebration of childhood memories, a tribute to the beauty of nature, and a testament to the designer's technical expertise and artistic skill. As Pang himself puts it, "Every object has a story to tell." And indeed, Coral tells a beautiful story.
