Calm the World: A Tranquil Dental Clinic Design

Creating a Calming Ambiance for Dental Patients

To many patients, seeing dentists have always been stressful. And since the waiting time is usually longer than expected, the design team proposed that a calm ambiance while waiting would be the key to the design. A spacious high ceiling lobby functioned as the reception and waiting area was then created for patients' first impression. They use a groin vault ceiling and some simple wood moldings plus the marble grids in promoting the ambiance of an old school library, where one can always seek for his own calmness.

This dental clinic design, aptly named "Calm the World," aims to alleviate the anxiety and stress often associated with dental visits. Designed by Matt Liao and his team, the clinic offers a tranquil and soothing environment for patients, starting from the moment they step into the reception area.

The highlight of the design is the spacious high ceiling lobby that serves as the reception and waiting area. Inspired by the ambiance of an old school library, the lobby features a groin vault ceiling, simple wood moldings, and marble grids on the floor. These elements combine to create a serene atmosphere where patients can find solace and calmness.

Despite the limited space of the clinic, the design team successfully incorporated all the necessary facilities. The first floor houses three examination rooms, an x-ray room, a dental laboratory with separate in/out doors, a reception, a waiting area, and restrooms. The mezzanine level accommodates an operating room, a consulting room, a multi-use office, and additional restrooms.

The design utilizes a combination of materials, including Formica, steel, glass, wallpaper, and marble. These materials not only contribute to the aesthetic appeal of the clinic but also ensure durability and functionality.

Since its completion in June 2019, the clinic has been operating for over nine months. Patient feedback indicates that the waiting experience has become more relaxed and calm. Despite the prevalence of digital devices, the old-school library ambiance serves as a reminder of the importance of finding inner peace.

The "Calm the World" dental clinic is located in New Taipei City and was completed within a timeframe of four months, from February to June 2019. The design team faced several challenges, including the need to understand detailed dental examination and operating procedures while maximizing the limited space. Collaboration with dentists and dental equipment suppliers proved invaluable in overcoming these challenges.

This innovative design has been recognized for its excellence and practicality. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2020 in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This prestigious award acknowledges designs that meet professional and industrial requirements, integrating industry best practices and competent technical characteristics.

With its calming ambiance and thoughtful design, "Calm the World" sets a new standard for dental clinics, providing patients with a serene and stress-free experience.
