Haikou West Coast Southern Park: A Harmonious Blend of Architecture and Nature

MUDA Architects' Award-Winning Visitor Center Design

Yun Lu and the MUDA Architects team have designed a visitor center for Haikou West Coast Southern Park that seamlessly integrates with its natural surroundings. Inspired by an oval pebble washed by the sea, the design has been recognized with a Golden A' Design Award in 2020.

The design of the visitor center is a testament to MUDA Architects' commitment to ecological architecture. The building, shaped like an oval pebble, is nestled at the entrance of the park, blending in with the surrounding landscape. This integration creates a visually appealing and ecologically harmonious environment.

What sets this design apart is its seamless integration with the natural landscape. The visitor center is not just a building, but a landmark that reflects the city's style. The design follows the overall tonality of the park's planning, merging into the natural landscape in a streamlined manner, and maintaining harmony with the surrounding areas.

The visitor center is realized through the use of white composite aluminium sheeting for the continuous roof, unifying the indoor and outdoor spaces. The facade features a tempered hollow glass curtain wall, enhancing the openness of the space. This glass curtain wall is equipped with a perforated aluminum sunshade, adding a dynamic element to the facade while reducing direct sunlight for energy efficiency.

The elliptical spatial layout of the building integrates perfectly with the streamline landscape of the site. The inner courtyard, leaning to one side, forms a stark contrast between the real and the virtual, creating a transitional space for tourists to enter the interior.

The visitor center was conceived to respect the coastal and tropical nature ecology of Haikou, blending the indigenous spiritual and cultural heritage. The design, completed in June 2020, is located in Haikou, Hainan Province, China. The design team included Chief Architect Yun Lu, Jiandan Xu, Fan He, Yixuan Mei, Dian Rong, Shuran Jia, Shuaibing Sun, Xiaohan Wang, and Manxin Xiong.

The visitor center's design is a testament to MUDA Architects' innovative approach to architecture, blending art, travel, and hospitality in a unique way. The design's recognition with a Golden A' Design Award in 2020 further underscores its excellence and impact on the world of architecture.
