Macau Light Festival 2019 TVC: A Glittery Journey Through Time

Designer Puzzle Lai Meng Tak's Award-Winning Visual Spectacle

Marking the 20th anniversary of Macao's return to the motherland, the Macau Light Festival 2019 TVC, designed by Puzzle Lai Meng Tak, is a visual feast that invites spectators on a journey through Macao's evolving cityscape over the last two decades. This article explores the inspiration, unique properties, realization technology, and challenges faced in the creation of this innovative TV commercial.

The Macau Light Festival 2019 TVC was inspired by the idea of a grand birthday celebration. The festival, themed "Explore the Light", invites residents and visitors to participate in various themed lighting installations, 3D mapping, and interactive games. The festival's mascot, Mak Mak, guides spectators through four glittery routes, each offering a different perspective on Macao's transformation over the past two decades. The adventure is designed to evoke stories, memories, and the joy of the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Macao SAR.

What sets this TV commercial apart is its innovative approach to storytelling. The entire Light Festival is conceptualized as a giant birthday cake, with each layer representing a different aspect of Macao's history and culture. This concept was brought to life through meticulous pre-production and post-production special effects, resulting in a unique and immersive viewing experience.

The realization of this project involved careful planning and coordination. All shots were planned in the storyboard, and a demo motion was created in 3D software. This allowed for the preparation of all materials and props before the video shooting. The animation incorporates elements of Macao's unique features and characteristics in the form of installation art, adding depth and context to the advertisement.

The project, which started in October 2019 and finished in November 2019 in Macau, was a collaborative effort. The team included director Puzzle Lai, director of photography Simmy Cheong, drone operator Simon Ma, and 3D animators SPICY Banana and Pancy Ng, among others. The final product is a HD 1920X1080 video that can be operated in every video player.

The Macau Light Festival 2019 TVC faced several challenges, the most significant being the realization of the concept of the Light Festival as a giant birthday cake. However, through creative problem-solving and technical expertise, the team was able to overcome these challenges and create a visually stunning and meaningful representation of Macao's 20th anniversary celebrations.

In recognition of its creative and technical excellence, the Macau Light Festival 2019 TVC was awarded Silver in A' Movie, Video and Animation Design Award in 2020. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill. The TV commercial is a testament to the talent and dedication of its designer, Puzzle Lai Meng Tak, and the entire production team.
