In celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the D&AD design and advertising awards, designers Mateus de Paula and Loic Francois Dubois collaborated on a remarkable project. They created "Wish You Were Here," an anniversary tribute video that pays homage to the outstanding creativity and art direction showcased throughout the history of D&AD.
The creative team behind "Wish You Were Here" had the unique opportunity to delve into D&AD's extensive archive, sifting through thousands of remarkable examples of design and art direction. Their selection process was guided by both the historical significance of the pieces and their own personal taste, while also aiming to strike a balance between old and new, popular and more obscure works.
Over 20 references were carefully chosen and reinterpreted using various techniques such as 2D and 3D animation, stop motion, live action, and puppetry. The team seamlessly blended characters and narratives from different advertisements, creating a flowing and surrealistic narrative that mirrors the unpredictable nature of memory.
The resulting video is a minute and 35 seconds long, captivating viewers with its mesmerizing visuals and thought-provoking storytelling. "Wish You Were Here" was primarily released online, but it also served as the opening piece for the 2015 D&AD Professional Awards ceremony.
The project, which began with presentations in London and was developed in São Paulo, Brazil, spanned nearly a year. It involved meticulous planning, drawings, shootings, animations, and post-production, showcasing the dedication and expertise of the entire design team.
Recognized for its exceptional creativity and ingenuity, "Wish You Were Here" received the Bronze A' Design Award in the Movie, Video, and Animation Design category in 2016. This prestigious accolade is bestowed upon designs that exemplify resourcefulness, technical skill, and contributions to improving the quality of life.
