Yancheng Nanyang: A Story of City and Nature

Miaoyi Jiang's Award-Winning Design Brings Yancheng's Landscape to Life

Yancheng Nanyang, an airport hotel designed by Miaoyi Jiang, encapsulates the essence of Yancheng city. The design, inspired by the city's fields, rivers, and mountains, has won the prestigious Golden A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2020. This article delves into the unique features, inspiration, and realization of this remarkable project.

Located in the terminal of Yancheng airport, Yancheng Nanyang is the first impression or the last memory of Yancheng for many passengers. The design brief required a representation of local characteristics, and Miaoyi Jiang's inspiration came from the city's natural landscape. The fields, rivers, and mountains, viewed from an airplane, provide a strong sense of place and have been woven into the design as a storyline running through every space.

The design stands out through its repetition of form and reorganization, creating a strong contrast that fills the space with a sense of pleasure and surprise. The choice of materials adheres to principles of green, environmentally sustainable development. The design advocates for green energy saving and pays attention to functionality and emotional design intentions.

The main materials used in the project include wood veneer, stone, glass, wallpaper, paint, and aluminum plate. Covering a total of 8500 square meters, the project started in May 2019 in Jiangsu and was completed in March 2020. The design team, including Miaoyi Jiang, Yuqing Li, and Yang An, faced the challenge of selecting materials that met environmental protection requirements and cost performance, ensuring the design effect within the owner's limited budget.

The design tells the story of Yancheng city, from the curved wall of the lobby to the geometric ceiling of the dining room and the screen of the guest room. The design interacts with the viewer, expressing the fields, mountains, and rivers of Yancheng through materials and soft decoration. The preliminary design of the architectural institute led to some unsatisfactory elevation in some areas, but after BIM calculation and discussion, the decoration effect was maximized.

Yancheng Nanyang is a testament to the power of design to tell a story and create a sense of place. The design was awarded the Golden A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2020, a testament to its outstanding and trendsetting creation that reflects the designer's prodigy and wisdom. The design embodies extraordinary excellence and significantly impacts the world with its desirable characteristics.

Copyrights for the design belong to Miaoyi Jiang, 2019. The project's images, including those of the lobby, elevator, restaurant, banquet hall, and guest room, were captured by Gold Mantis in 2019. This design is a remarkable example of how architecture and interior design can capture and express the essence of a place, creating a unique and memorable experience for its users.
