Revolutionizing Dental Imaging: Planmeca's Romexis 6

The inspiration behind Romexis 6 was to challenge the conventional approach to software design. Planmeca aimed to create a product that was not only technically advanced but also adaptable to individual workflows and preferences. This ambition led to a complete redesign of the user interface, making a complex product more intuitive.

What sets Romexis apart is its ability to capture, view, and process all types of imaging data, including X-rays, 3D images, photos, and videos, within a single system. The latest version, Romexis 6, enhances this functionality with a fresh user interface that puts the user in charge. Its customizable look and range of available tools are designed to streamline workflows and instill confidence in treatment professionals.

The design process involved exploring different concepts through hundreds of user interface sketches and mockups. These were extensively tested in collaboration with a broad range of dental professionals and specialists. The design work was carried out using Sketch and Adobe XD tools, while the software was developed in Java.

Romexis is designed to work as standalone software on a standard PC or as a networked software platform. It caters to a wide range of dental professionals, including dentists, dental surgeons, and radiologists. It can retrieve, process, render, diagnose, review, store, and share images of adult and pediatric patients. Additionally, it can be used for simulating/evaluating surgical treatment options and designing models, guides, and splints for maxillofacial surgery.

One of the key innovations of Romexis 6 is its ability to accommodate both new and advanced users. While experienced users can personalize their workflows, less experienced ones can benefit from the all-new Workflow Wizards. These provide step-by-step guidance through quick videos and helpful texts, allowing even advanced tasks to be performed with ease.

The project began in 2018 at Planmeca HQ in Helsinki and was released in May 2020. The design principles were based on extensive research, including surveys with dental professionals and Romexis users, follow-up interviews, field observations, and feedback from clickable prototypes. This award-winning software is a testament to Planmeca's commitment to creating user-oriented solutions that respond to the diverse needs and practices of dental professionals worldwide.
