Intelligent Vision Test: Revolutionizing Vision Testing with Automation and Sensing

Enhancing Precision and Convenience in Vision Testing

Nowadays, the widespread use of electronic devices has led to a significant increase in the number of people with myopia. It is estimated that by 2050, half of the world's population will be affected by this condition. As a result, the demand for vision testing has skyrocketed. Recognizing the need for a more efficient and accurate solution, designers Yen Chang and Kai-Chu Li have developed the Intelligent Vision Test (IVT).

The Intelligent Vision Test is a wall-mounted medical device that combines automation and sensing systems to streamline the vision testing process. Unlike traditional methods that involve cumbersome mode switching and manual calculations, the IVT simplifies the entire procedure, making it more convenient for both patients and medical professionals.

One of the standout features of the IVT is its ability to provide fitting suggestions and voice interaction through trial lenses. This ensures that glasses wearers can make the best choice when it comes to selecting lenses. Additionally, the IVT's screen is designed to be adjustable, allowing it to accommodate both adults and children during measurements.

The IVT incorporates advanced technology to achieve its remarkable functionality. The lens on the device can sense the direction of the subject's gestures, as well as the degree and rotation angle of the test lens. Furthermore, the IVT is equipped with a lifting device that moves the screen up and down to cater to the testing needs of individuals of different heights.

By automating the vision detection process, the IVT significantly reduces the workload of medical staff, making the testing process smoother and more efficient. Furthermore, the device is designed to meet the specific needs of each testee, with AI assistance in measuring vision acuity and recommending the most suitable lens options.

The development of the IVT involved extensive research and collaboration with senior optometrists. By identifying the shortcomings of existing vision test devices and leveraging the advantages of the IVT, Chang and Li were able to create a truly unique and innovative solution.

Overcoming various creative, technical, and research challenges, the designers continuously refined the interface and user experience of the IVT. The graphical presentation and information expression on the device's interface were carefully designed to ensure clear instructions and seamless interaction for users. The result is a device that not only provides accurate vision testing but also enhances the overall experience for both patients and optometrists.

The Intelligent Vision Test is set to undergo testing with experts in 2023 and is expected to be available on the market in 2024. Its groundbreaking design and functionality have already been recognized, as the IVT was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interface, Interaction, and User Experience Design category in 2023. This prestigious accolade acknowledges the IVT's outstanding creativity, resourcefulness, and contribution to improving the quality of life.
