What sets "The Portable" apart is its unique feature of transforming a part of itself into a portable handle. This innovative design allows users to easily pack and carry 1-3 lunch boxes without the need for disposable plastic bags. The edges of the lunch box can be torn open along dotted lines, forming a sturdy handle that securely holds the boxes together.
Measuring 150mm wide, 200mm long, and 50mm high, "The Portable" is designed to be compact and convenient for everyday use. It is made using injection technology and laser cutting, ensuring durability and precision in its construction.
By integrating multiple lunch boxes into a single portable unit, "The Portable" significantly reduces the use of plastic bags for packing meals. This environmentally friendly design not only addresses the issue of plastic waste but also provides a practical solution for individuals who rely on takeaway meals.
Using "The Portable" is simple and intuitive. After placing the meal inside, users can close the lid and tear along the dotted lines on the sides of the lunch box to form a handle. The remaining lunch boxes can then be securely packed and fixed, ready to be taken away.
The project, which was carried out at the South China University of Technology, began in January 2020 and was completed in February 2020. Throughout the design process, Minghui Lyu faced the challenge of determining the optimal length for the handle, ensuring it was coordinated with the length and height of the lunch box.
"The Portable" has garnered recognition for its innovative approach to sustainable design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Disposable and Single-Use Product Design category in 2020. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. "The Portable" stands out for its integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and contribution to a better world.
Minghui Lyu's "The Portable" lunch box design is a testament to the power of innovation and sustainability. By combining functionality and eco-consciousness, this design offers a practical solution for reducing plastic waste in the catering industry and encourages a more sustainable lifestyle.
