Tag Tag: A Green Innovation in Disposable Cup Design

Designers Jiani Zeng and Yi Teng Shih's Award-Winning Solution to Reduce Waste

In a world where sustainability is no longer a choice but a necessity, designers Jiani Zeng and Yi Teng Shih have created a unique solution to a common problem: disposable cup waste. Their design, Tag Tag, is a simple yet effective innovation that not only reduces waste but also enhances user interaction.

Tag Tag was born out of a casual conversation overheard during a meeting break. The common problem of forgetting which disposable cup belongs to whom often leads to unnecessary waste, as people tend to grab a new cup rather than risk drinking from someone else's. This inspired the designers to create a solution that would not only reduce waste but also add an element of fun and personalization to the otherwise mundane disposable cup.

The unique property of Tag Tag lies in its simplicity. The cup is designed with a scratch-off tag made from food-grade materials. Users can scratch off any pattern they like to distinguish their cup from others. This interactive feature not only solves the problem of cup confusion but also provides an engaging activity for users. Whether it's doodling during a meeting or writing a morning greeting for a boss, Tag Tag adds a touch of creativity to the everyday.

The design of Tag Tag is not only innovative but also environmentally friendly. Both the cup and the tag are made from food-grade materials, ensuring safety for users and less harm to the environment. The cup measures 75mm in diameter and 88mm in height, making it a perfect fit for any event or meeting.

The project was started and completed in November 2016 in Hangzhou. Despite the challenges of creating a design that is both functional and engaging, the designers were able to successfully realize their vision. Their efforts were recognized when Tag Tag was awarded the Golden A' Disposable and Single-Use Product Design Award in 2017. This prestigious award is granted to outstanding creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom, and significantly impact the world with their desirable characteristics.

The designers' notes on the design highlight the importance of interaction between products and users. Tag Tag is more than just a disposable cup; it's a tool for reducing waste, a canvas for creativity, and a testament to the power of design in solving everyday problems. With Tag Tag, Jiani Zeng and Yi Teng Shih have turned a simple disposable cup into a symbol of sustainable design.
