The Armor, as the costume is aptly named, draws inspiration from both Western and Japanese war pieces. Its design reflects the duality of the character it dresses, Richard III, and the physical and emotional challenges he faces. The armor's unique properties lie in its composition of fully recycled materials, including metallic corset nerves and a butcher's chainmail glove, signifying the character's bloodthirsty nature. Leather leggings, layered to represent the character's various faces, complete the ensemble.
The Armor is made up of six pieces: a metal structure sewn onto a twill weave jerkin jacket, leather armor with overlapping gaiters, a chainmail glove, a helmet lined with metal strips, black twill pants, and knee-high black leather boots. Each piece contributes to the overall impression of a modern, yet vulnerable king, living simultaneously as a man and a monarch.
The design process, which took place in Havana, Cuba from June to September 2018, involved extensive research into historical and technical aspects of armor design. The designers faced the challenge of adapting historical engineering structures to modern materials. They also had to source materials in Cuba, where resources are scarce. Despite these challenges, they successfully created a visually striking and functional piece of costume design.
The Armor is not just a costume, but an interactive piece of theater. The modular design allows the actor to remove or add pieces as the character evolves throughout the play. This interaction between actor and costume enhances the theatrical experience, making the Armor a character in its own right.
This innovative design has been recognized with a Silver A' Performing Arts, Stage, Style and Scenery Design Award in 2020. The award celebrates top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation. The Armor, with its blend of historical inspiration and modern materials, certainly fits this description.
In conclusion, The Armor is a testament to the power of innovative design and the potential of recycled materials. Its creation showcases the talent and creativity of designers Samantha Chijona Garcia and Vladimir Cuenca, and their ability to bring a character to life through costume design. The Armor is not just a costume, but a symbol of the duality and complexity of Richard III, and a testament to the power of theater to bring history to life.
