Ravaq: A Modern Reflection of Ancient Persian Architecture

Renewing the Grandeur of Moqarnas Ceilings

Ravaq is a unique side table that draws inspiration from the intricate moqarnas ceilings found in Persian architecture. Designed by Ali Sharifi Omid, this piece aims to capture the essence of these ancient motifs and bring them into the contemporary world.

Moqarnas, a decorative element of Persian architecture, was traditionally used to buttress domes and mosque ceilings. Over time, it evolved into an ornamental feature, with ceilings adorned with mosaic-style mirrors to maximize light reflection from any angle.

Ravaq takes these grand moqarnas ceilings and reinterprets them on a smaller scale. The design reflects the surrounding colors from different angles, creating a mesmerizing play of light and shadow. It serves as a modern reconstruction that bridges the gap between ancient tradition and contemporary design.

To achieve a high level of precision and quality, Ravaq is produced using CNC cutting techniques on stainless steel and glass sheets. This minimizes human error and ensures a flawless final product. The main mass of the table is a mirror, interacting with the surrounding space and adding a touch of architectural elegance to any environment.

With dimensions of 464mm in height and a diameter of 586mm, Ravaq weighs 14kg. Its geometric and parametric design, inspired by Persian motifs, makes it a captivating addition to any interior space. This side table serves both as a functional piece of furniture and a work of art.

Ali Sharifi Omid, the designer behind Ravaq, has dedicated extensive research to Iranian-Islamic geometric designs and patterns. His aim is to bring these ancient motifs into the modern world, creating furniture pieces that embody the essence of Persian architecture.

The main challenge in creating Ravaq was to transform traditional patterns and motifs into innovative and contemporary forms. The result is a design that transports you back in time while seamlessly integrating with modern furniture.

Ravaq was mass-produced in Iran in December of last year, showcasing the fusion of traditional craftsmanship and cutting-edge technology. Its unique blend of history, art, and functionality has earned it the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2020.

With Ravaq, Ali Sharifi Omid has successfully captured the grandeur and beauty of moqarnas ceilings, infusing them into a modern piece of furniture. This side table serves as a testament to the rich history of Persian architecture and its enduring influence on contemporary design.
