Velo Solex Revival: A Modern Twist on a Classic Design

Reviving the Iconic Velo Solex with a Modern Electric Bicycle

The Velo Solex Revival takes inspiration from the original Velo Solex gasoline moped from 1946 and transforms it into a sleek and modern electric bicycle. Designed by Francisco Cervantes and Brian Hoehl, this innovative creation combines the charm of the past with the efficiency of the present.

The Velo Solex Revival stands out from other electric bicycles with its unique design and features. The designers have obtained the rights to use the Solex brand through a license agreement, allowing them to pay homage to the original 1949 Solex design. The frame geometry and shape remain true to the original, while being modified to accommodate an electric motor and battery. The use of modern materials, such as aluminum, ensures a lightweight yet sturdy frame.

One of the main challenges faced by the design team was reducing the weight of the bicycle without compromising its performance. With the addition of a battery and motor, maintaining a lightweight design was crucial. To overcome this challenge, the team opted for unconventional materials like carbon and Kevlar instead of traditional metals and alloys. This innovative approach resulted in a record-breaking weight for an electric bicycle.

The Velo Solex Revival is not only visually appealing but also highly functional. Extensive research in aerodynamics and the weight-to-stiffness ratio of frames has been conducted, setting new standards in the electric bicycle industry. The insights gathered from 500 end consumers have contributed to the development of a design that prioritizes both performance and user experience.

With a size of 180 cm x 55 cm x 95 cm and weighing only 25 kilograms, the Velo Solex Revival offers a compact and lightweight solution for urban commuting. Its electric drive train, powered by Bosch, ensures a smooth and efficient ride, making it an ideal choice for daily transportation.

The Velo Solex Revival project took 12 months from the initial sketches to the final product. The design team, based in Paris, worked tirelessly to bring this modern interpretation of the iconic Solex to life. Their dedication and attention to detail have resulted in a design that seamlessly blends the past with the present.

Recognized for its outstanding creativity and ingenuity, the Velo Solex Revival has been awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Vehicle, Mobility, and Transportation Design category. This prestigious accolade acknowledges designs that excel in incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology, ultimately contributing to a better quality of life.

With the Velo Solex Revival, Francisco Cervantes and Brian Hoehl have successfully revived a classic design, transforming it into a modern electric bicycle that combines style, functionality, and sustainability. This innovative creation is a testament to their commitment to pushing the boundaries of design in the pursuit of a better future.
