Coastline: A Layered Table Inspired by Global Warming

A Unique Design by Yu-Han Wu

Taking inspiration from the rising sea levels caused by global warming, designer Yu-Han Wu has created Coastline, a table that showcases the beauty of eroded coastlines.

The Coastline table stands out with its uneven appearance, reminiscent of a coastline eroded by seawater. This unique design feature adds layers and depth to the table, making it a visually captivating piece.

The table's design incorporates different materials to represent the clarity of the sea and the height of the mountains. The tabletop is made of liquid acrylic, symbolizing the clearness of the sea, while the main structure of the table is crafted from michelia compressa and pine wood, representing the towering mountains. This combination of materials creates a beautiful interplay of light and layers.

The realization of the Coastline table involves the use of PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) for the tabletop, known for its excellent light transmission properties. The main structure of the table is crafted from michelia compressa and pine wood, chosen for their durability and resistance to deformation during the shaping process.

The Coastline table measures 350 mm in width, 650 mm in depth, and 500 mm in height, making it a functional and aesthetically pleasing addition to any space.

This stunning table not only serves as a functional piece of furniture but also as a thought-provoking art installation. It reminds us of the impact of global warming and the beauty that may be lost due to rising sea levels.

The Coastline table was first exhibited in June 2017 at the Songshan Cultural and Creative Park in Taiwan. It was later showcased at the Taipei Pavilion of Fashion in November 2019. Its unique design and meaningful concept have garnered attention and recognition.

Creating the Coastline table presented several challenges for the designer. The use of liquid acrylic required high-temperature heating, which posed a risk of deformation for the wooden structure. To overcome this, michelia compressa wood was chosen for its hard texture and resistance to deformation. Additionally, achieving the perfect color grading and transmittance for the liquid acrylic took extensive testing and experimentation.

Coastline is a testament to the power of design in conveying important messages. It serves as a reminder of the impact of global warming and the need for sustainable practices to protect our environment. Yu-Han Wu's creation has been recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2020, a testament to its innovative and practical design.
