Inside Out: A Raw and Eco-Friendly Design

An Innovative Approach to Elevating DesignInspire

DesignInspire, a three-day exhibition event dedicated to promoting the design industry, took place in Hong Kong in December 2019. The event organizer, the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), sought an eco-friendly approach to enhance the spatial design of the show. This led to the creation of a unique concept called Inside Out, which not only minimized waste but also provided a raw and neutral aesthetic to uplift the ambiance of the event.

The inspiration for the Inside Out concept came from the challenges of being eco-friendly while creating an image uplift. The design team, led by Jason Cheung, Dury Chin, Eddie Chak, KK Cheung, Cherry Chan, and Abby Chan, researched various alternatives and found that the details of wall structures in theater sets were most suitable. By turning a temporary wall structure inside out to expose all its workings, they were able to create a visually captivating design.

The main materials used for the spatial design were plywood paneling, off-the-shelf fixings, hired scaffolding, reusable aluminum structure, digital graphic print, and stickers. The reception counter, entrance treatment, two open workshops, communal product display areas, and the open forum were all constructed using these materials. The design team worked tirelessly during the limited three-day onsite move-in period to fine-tune lighting, audio, art direction, and visual merchandising.

The Inside Out design featured a raw and neutral aesthetic developed from plywood panels and scaffolding, which contrasted against the yellow and black graphics used throughout the event to indicate the organizer's work. This aesthetic helped to clearly define the wayfinding, the open forum space, the two open workshop areas, and the communal product display zones. The layout was open and created for self-exploration, allowing attendees to immerse themselves in the design.

One of the key challenges faced by the design team was finding a concept that would meet the brief of being eco-friendly while also uplifting the spatial image of DesignInspire. To minimize onsite waste, a new set of rules was developed, which included repurposing materials once the show was over and avoiding creating unwanted material offcuts. The result was an ethical approach that provided a neutral and raw event design, juxtaposing the finished products being exhibited at the show.

The Inside Out design for DesignInspire was a testament to the creativity and resourcefulness of the design team. It not only met the organizer's request for an eco-friendly approach but also created a visually stunning and engaging environment for attendees. The raw and neutral aesthetic, achieved through the use of plywood and scaffolding, added a unique touch to the event, setting it apart from other design exhibitions.

This innovative design was recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in the Event and Happening Design category in 2021. This prestigious award is bestowed upon outstanding and creatively ingenious designs that authenticate experience and resourcefulness. The Inside Out design exemplifies strong technical and creative skills and contributes to quality of life improvements, making the world a better place.
