Triple Reuse: A Sustainable Approach to Trade Fair Design

HK Trade Development Council's Innovative Installation Wins Silver A' Design Award

The inspiration for Triple Reuse came from the need to reduce construction waste during trade fairs. The council used a mobile truck as a core element, transforming it to suit the theme of each fair. The truck took on the roles of a futuristic transporter, a pop-up flower shop, and a candy store, each time creating a unique visual impact for visitors.

Each transformation of the mobile truck was achieved in an eco-sustainable manner. The council used graphic stickers, hired props, changed the A/V lighting, and altered the title signage. The flower shop even used real flowers, and the candy shop was infused with a candyfloss fragrance to heighten the sensory experience.

The mobile truck was made offsite and assembled onsite. The shell of the truck was made of plywood for durability. The truck was modified in succession for the Hong Kong Electronic Fair, the HK Houseware Fair, and the HK Gifts & Premium Fair. This approach proved to be the most sustainable and cost-effective design compared to previous years.

The council faced the challenge of producing an effective image upgrade while maintaining sustainability. The solution was the Triple Reuse methodology, which minimized onsite wastage. The focus was on art directing the hired props, graphics, lighting, and title signage changes.

The Triple Reuse project took three months from concept to completion. All three trade fairs were held at the Hong Kong Conference and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) in Wan Chai, Hong Kong. The project is a testament to the council's commitment to sustainability and creativity, and it has set a new standard for trade fair design.
