Brot Yanagi: A Harmonious Blend of Bakery and Residential Design

Creating a Vibrant and Inviting Bakery in a Quiet Residential Neighborhood

Inspired by the need for noise and foot traffic control in a residential area, Hiroyuki Niwa, the designer behind Brot Yanagi, crafted a bakery that seamlessly blends into its surroundings while still standing out as a vibrant and inviting space. With a focus on harmonizing with the neighborhood and incorporating elements commonly found in residential construction, Brot Yanagi offers a unique and delightful experience for both locals and visitors.

A renovation and extension project, Brot Yanagi transformed an existing residential structure into a bakery shop that captures the essence of the surrounding residential area. The standout feature of the design is the arched section that houses the bakery's oven and counter. This section not only adds visual interest but also serves as a symbol of the bakery, poking out of a street-side window and creating a vibrant and humorous exterior appearance.

What sets Brot Yanagi apart is its ability to seamlessly connect with the residential neighborhood while still maintaining its own identity. The modest storefront and the use of materials commonly found in housing construction, such as tiles, wood, and plastered walls, create a harmonious connection with the surrounding area. Passersby are invited to peek into the kitchen on the street side, offering a glimpse into the baking process and creating a sense of curiosity and intrigue.

Upon entering Brot Yanagi, visitors are greeted with an extensive display of baked goods. The design of the space ensures that it is open, well-lit, and exciting, providing a delightful environment for patrons to explore and enjoy. The bakery's total floor area may be small, but through careful spatial planning and material choice, the design resolves any dimensional limitations, creating a space that feels spacious and inviting.

One of the challenges faced during the design process was finding the balance between the new shop space and the existing structure. The goal was to create a symbolic volume in a residential area without disrupting the townscape. By carefully working through these conflicting elements, Brot Yanagi was able to attract not only the neighbors but also people from afar, acting as a community place that brings people together.

Brot Yanagi was completed in May 2019 in Atsuta-ku, Nagoya City, Aichi Japan. It serves as a model for the growing trend of renovating residential structures to incorporate commercial spaces. The design showcases the possibilities of blending different functions while maintaining the integrity of the surrounding environment and addressing the unique challenges that come with mixed-use housing.

With its harmonious design, vibrant exterior, and inviting interior, Brot Yanagi has been recognized for its excellence. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2021. This prestigious award celebrates designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life.
