Family Lounge House

A 5-story residential house that seamlessly blends nature and family life

The mountain so close yet so unreachable; so calm yet so green and alive, that it naturally composes a stress-less painting to the house. By looking at the picture of this natural scene, it would be a waste not to make the most use of it with the families. Everyone should enjoy the sunlight and breathe the air everywhere in this space and exchange the experiences they learned in the house and create more functions and fun while living in it.

A 5-story house located in Hsinchu, Taiwan, the Family Lounge House designed by Shin-Yi Lin is a unique residential space that prioritizes the connection between nature and family life. With a big backyard and a refreshing breeze from the nearby mountain, the house effortlessly integrates the beauty of the natural surroundings. The design aims to invite more nature into the interior spaces, achieved through the use of light oak furniture that runs throughout the house, enhancing photosynthesis inside. The furniture is strategically stretched to create smooth patterns that extend the sight, evoking a sense of taking a deep breath in a meadow bathed in sunshine.

The Family Lounge House is not just a typical residential space; it is a sharing lounge that provides individual functions in specific corners while encouraging conversations and connections between family members. Breaking the boundaries between interior and exterior, the design seamlessly links the family life together after work and school. The touch of wood extensions further enhances the connection between the indoor and outdoor spaces.

Despite its stunning design, the Family Lounge House faced challenges during its realization. Originally, there was a solid wall separating the interior space from the backyard. However, upon opening the door, a gentle breeze would greet visitors, prompting the decision to break through the wall and embrace the natural light and green meadow. This required architectural modifications, including the insertion of an architectural base into the ground and the rearrangement of the draining system. The transformation was not simply tearing off a piece of the building's skin; it was a renewal heart surgery that delivered a completely different life to this house.

The Family Lounge House spans five stories, with each floor covering 100 square meters. The layout of the house is relatively rectangular, providing a functional and efficient living space. The project started in February 2013 in Hsinchu and was completed in March 2014.

This exceptional design has been recognized for its excellence and innovation. The Family Lounge House was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in 2016 in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This prestigious award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation. The Family Lounge House stands out for its strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, evoking positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
