Blue Moon: A Unique Classroom Design by Andrew Liu

Creating an Imaginative Learning Space

Unlike conventional learning environments, Blue Moon embraces smooth and open circulation planning and transparent visual scale. The use of reinforced glass supports all fixed objects in the space, allowing for a clear view of each teaching area. The screens in public areas are designed with an organic arrangement, mimicking the changeable but periodic characteristics of the moon. The sinusoidal curve concept is incorporated into the facade of the screens, further enhancing the overall aesthetic.

The louvers that separate the interior space are created with a unique sinusoidal curve shape. The iron pipes are welded to an iron base, with a second layer made of wood to create different magnifications. LED lights are strategically placed to highlight the arc-shaped design. The concrete walls of the classroom space are supported by the floor slab, giving the illusion of the walls floating in the air. Glass partitions and doors below further enhance the visual appeal of the space.

With a design area of approximately 105,7856 square meters, Blue Moon is divided into classrooms and toilets. The left half of the space is dedicated to study group discussions, visually presented as a dynamic and tangible louver wall that can be adjusted flexibly to create various spaces. The right half is reserved for classrooms, featuring static invisible glass that reduces the stiffness of the space. This transparent and free-flowing layout encourages interaction among students and fosters communication between different teaching groups, as well as with the wider community.

One of the main challenges faced by the design team was finding the right balance between public and private spaces. The goal was to create open and shared public areas while maintaining the privacy of the private spaces. The team also had to carefully consider the layout to accommodate different group learning methods within a limited space. Mathematical formulas were used to accurately calculate the curves of the louvers, ensuring that the beauty and rhythm of the space were maintained, even when the louvers were reorganized or decomposed.

Blue Moon was completed in January 2019 in Taipei, Taiwan. The design was driven by the client's belief that learning English should be integrated into daily life and the surrounding environment. The project aimed to achieve a balance between functionality, visual appeal, and auditory experience in the common spaces. The result is a unique and inspiring learning environment that challenges traditional design norms.

Blue Moon has been recognized for its outstanding design and creativity. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2021. This prestigious award honors designs that demonstrate resourcefulness, technical skill, and contribute to improving the quality of life.
