Costa Rican City Embraces Nature's Geometry in Innovative Branding

In a world where cities strive to stand out, Curridabat in Costa Rica has taken a unique approach to its branding. The city's new identity, "Curridabat Ciudad Dulce," is a nature-inspired design that reflects its commitment to the well-being of all its inhabitants, human and non-human alike. This innovative design, created by Fabrizzio Mendez and his team, has garnered international recognition, winning the Silver A' Design Award in 2021.

The design of Curridabat Ciudad Dulce is rooted in the principles of nature. The team drew inspiration from the patterns, shapes, and structures found in the natural environment, from the city's topography to the veins in a leaf. This approach resulted in a flexible brand that can adapt to the city's diverse audiences and activities. The design's essence is defined by harmony, organization, and logic, reflecting the city's vision for community development.

Creating a visual system that accurately represented the city's innovative vision was a significant challenge. The team had to balance rational-scientific elements with emotional-holistic ones, reflecting a city that values all its inhabitants, including pollinators like bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. The final design, built on hexagon patterns reminiscent of beehives, achieves this balance, offering a coherent and organized representation of Curridabat's growth.

The design process involved a divergent creative exercise to capture relevant ideas and visuals, followed by a convergent exercise to filter and test these ideas. The team used Adobe Creative Cloud design tools to finalize the design. The resulting visual system, based on circumscribed hexagon-shaped patterns, facilitates the brand's identification and differentiation in all graphic materials.

The design's realization was not just a technical process but also involved extensive research. The team conducted in-depth interviews with key local government figures, reviewed demographic studies, and audited previous graphic materials and communication efforts. This research helped them understand the city's essence and define a brand that adequately reflected its innovative vision.

Since its completion in April 2019, the Curridabat Ciudad Dulce brand has been implemented in various derivative projects in collaboration with the local government. The brand's presence is visible in physical and digital graphic materials, outdoors, buildings, public furniture, and more, allowing audiences to experience the brand's universe.

The Curridabat Ciudad Dulce design is a testament to the power of nature-inspired design. Its success demonstrates how cities can use design to express their commitment to the well-being of all their inhabitants and create a positive experience for all. It serves as an inspiration for other cities looking to redefine their identities in a way that reflects their unique vision and values.
