Beauty Salon Sooyou

A Unique Space Inspired by Human Cells

Situated in Harbin, China, Sooyou is a beauty salon designed by Peihe Xie of AD ARCHITECTURE. Drawing inspiration from the constant fission of cells in the human body, the salon's spatial design aims to evoke underlying body memories and create a unique and immersive experience for its customers.

The entrance wall of Sooyou features a curved shape that echoes the arcs of the architecture, providing a unique perspective into the salon and adding a sense of mystery to the space. Inside, straight lines and curves are combined to outline large geometric blocks, creating a visually dramatic effect with cool concrete. These lines stretch and interweave, symbolizing the fluidity of human cells and creating a contrast between static and dynamic elements as customers move through the space.

One of the key features of Sooyou is the "fission" of structures, which creates rich experiences along the circulations while also providing privacy. The design team used geometric shapes and basic lines to translate the concept of cell fission into spatial structures. This innovative approach not only sets Sooyou apart from other beauty salons but also reflects the constant renewal and regeneration of cells in the human body.

The overall space is dominated by dark hues, with areas illuminated as spatial highlights. Shadows extend along the edges of light, creating an infinite room for imagination. The interplay of brightness and darkness at different layers stimulates emotional liberation and offers a calming and free experience throughout the salon. Gray and black shades set the overall tone, while a vibrant red hue enlivens and highlights specific areas.

Despite facing challenges such as a limited budget and the constraints of the COVID-19 pandemic, the design team successfully realized the complex spatial forms and structures using wooden splints. The accuracy of size, positions, and proportions was crucial in achieving the desired aesthetic. The team also had to adapt to remote communication with construction workers through video, demonstrating their resourcefulness and commitment to executing the design vision.

Sooyou is a pioneering experiment in commercial space design, breaking away from conventional order and injecting mystery and fun into the space. The abstract bionic aesthetic created through the inspiration of human cells adds a unique and captivating element to the beauty salon experience. The project was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2021, recognizing its outstanding creativity and ingenious design that contributes to improving the quality of life.

With its innovative design and immersive atmosphere, Sooyou offers a one-of-a-kind beauty salon experience that combines art, technology, and the human body's natural processes. It is a testament to the creativity and vision of Peihe Xie and AD ARCHITECTURE, pushing the boundaries of design in the pursuit of creating spaces that resonate with people on a deeper level.
