Lost Species: A Silver A' Design Award Winner

Lara Wilkin's Educational Illustrations Shed Light on Extinction

Lara Wilkin's "Lost Species" project, a series of educational illustrations, has won the Silver A' Design Award in 2021. The project aims to educate the public about extinction history and promote sustainability, emphasizing that extinction can be reversed. The illustrations are part of the Lazarus Effect campaign, which highlights the potential for the revival of extinct species.

The "Lost Species" project stands out due to its unique properties. It features three information graphics that serve as an introduction to the Lazarus-Effect topic. These include "The Six Major Mass Extinctions," "Death Watch of the Species," and an information graphic of the local Fern Plants and Flowering Plants. The graphics are detailed, drawn as vector graphics in black and white, and are designed to fit well with most museum scenographic installations.

The realization of the project involved a drawn layout followed by the use of Adobe Illustrator. The original sizes of the graphics are quite large, making them suitable for display in a museum setting. The project started in May 2020 and involved extensive research with anthropological, biological, and paleontological literature, as well as the support of various natural history museums.

The project faced several challenges, the most significant being the compression of complex information about extinction into an understandable graphic. The infographics are part of the Lazarus Effect Campaign, and special attention was paid to their complementary interaction. The black and white style in detail and the rich contrasted illustrations were chosen as the best way of visualization and communication for this serious topic.

The "Lost Species" project is tagged with keywords such as Lazarus Effect, Infographics, Natural sciences, mass extinction, and animal welfare. The project has received recognition for its innovative approach to education about extinction and sustainability. The Silver A' Design Award is awarded to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation.

The project's success is a testament to Lara Wilkin's commitment to raising awareness about the impact of human activities on nature. Through her work, she hopes to inspire a greater appreciation for biodiversity and a commitment to sustainable practices. The "Lost Species" project is a powerful reminder of the potential for change and the importance of each species in our planet's ecosystem.
