Lazarus Effekt: A Multimedia Awareness Campaign

Black and white vector illustrations bring attention to the Lazarus Effect

The Lazarus Effect is a multimedia awareness campaign designed by Lara Wilkin to shed light on the phenomenon of species rediscovery, known as the Lazarus Effect. Through a combination of print media, social media marketing, and merchandising, the campaign aims to educate and engage the public on the importance of protecting endangered species.

The Lazarus Effect campaign utilizes black and white vector illustrations to depict representatives from flora and fauna that have experienced the Lazarus Effect. This effect refers to the unintentional rediscovery of a previously lost or considered extinct form of life. Inspired by paleontologist David Jablonski's concept, the campaign aims to raise awareness about the fragility of these species and the need for conservation efforts.

The main illustration of the campaign features the German Lazarusse, acting as a visual key to unite all components of the campaign. These large prints, strategically placed on tall buildings, serve as eye-catching reminders of the species that were once considered extinct by humans but have made a comeback as a symbol of warning.

The black and white vector style of the illustrations allows for seamless integration across different media platforms. Whether it's campaign posters, flyers, banners, or information graphics, the illustrations grab the viewer's attention and encourage them to delve deeper into the campaign's message.

The Lazarus Effect campaign goes beyond traditional advertising methods. It incorporates social media marketing, a dedicated website, and guerrilla marketing strategies to reach a wider audience. By using the hashtag #LazarusEffekt, the campaign encourages users to engage with the content and share their own experiences or thoughts on the topic.

The technical realization of the campaign involved drawing the layout and creating the vector illustrations using Adobe Illustrator. The main illustration measures an impressive 32000 mm by 23428 mm, making it impossible to overlook.

Through extensive research in anthropological, biological, and paleontological literature, as well as collaborations with natural history museums, the campaign ensures accuracy and attention to detail. The illustrations are rich in complexity, inviting viewers to explore and discover more about the Lazarus Effect and the species it encompasses.

Overcoming the creative and technical challenges of compressing such a complex topic into a social education campaign was no easy feat. However, the black and white style, rich in contrast and detail, proved to be the most effective way to visually communicate the seriousness of the issue.

The Lazarus Effect campaign has been recognized for its creativity and ingenuity, receiving the Bronze A' Design Award in 2021. This prestigious award acknowledges designs that incorporate best practices in art, science, design, and technology, contributing to improvements in quality of life and making the world a better place.
