Huicong: Redefining Children's Furniture with Ergonomics and Tradition

Lei Wang and Panyan Fei's Award-Winning Study Chair Combines Solid Wood and Modern Functionality

Lei Wang and Panyan Fei's Huicong Study Chair, a unique blend of traditional solid wood furniture and modern ergonomic design, offers a fresh perspective on children's furniture. This innovative design, which has won the Silver A' Furniture Design Award in 2021, is a testament to the designers' commitment to safety, quality, and the health and learning efficiency of children.

The inspiration for the Huicong Study Chair stemmed from a prevalent preference for solid wood furniture in China, particularly for children's furniture. Solid wood often symbolises safety and quality, but traditional solid wood chairs are typically non-adjustable, posing a challenge for growing children. To address this, Lei Wang and Panyan Fei designed the Huicong Study Chair, a product that harmoniously marries modern technology and tradition.

What sets the Huicong Study Chair apart is its fusion of traditional solid wood furniture and functional furniture. Unlike the predominantly metal-based adjustable kids' chairs in the market, the Huicong Chair uses safer and warmer solid wood material. It allows easy adjustment of the footrest height, seat height, and sitting depth, providing users with a new choice and enriching the company's product line.

The Huicong Chair is primarily made of solid beech and plastic. Beech was chosen for its aesthetic appeal and relative stability. The wood is processed with large rounded corners to enhance safety for children, and the surface is treated with formaldehyde-free water-based paint from Akzonobel, applied using Italian Cefla automatic spraying equipment. The chair's dimensions are 462mm x 492mm x 710mm.

The Huicong Chair's seat height and sitting depth can be adjusted to accommodate children of different body shapes. The specially designed cushion with curvature enables the child to bend naturally, reducing the load on the spine. The seat cushion and backrest can be quickly installed and disassembled, facilitating the replacement of seat covers of various colours. The chair's front legs are equipped with wheels for easy transportation.

The Huicong Study Chair project started in July 2018 and was completed in July 2019 in Hangzhou. The chair's cushion height and depth can be adjusted as the child grows, and the sitting depth can be slightly adjusted depending on the size of the child. This feature sets it apart from other solid wood chairs in the market. The backrest's curved design and ergonomic cushion make it comfortable for long periods of study, and the addition of wheels enhances convenience for children. The design is patented (201921286613.0) by Hangzhou Two square meters Smart Home Technology Co., Ltd.

Lei Wang and Panyan Fei's Huicong Study Chair is a testament to the power of innovative design in improving children's furniture. By combining traditional materials with modern functionality, they have created a product that not only meets the needs of growing children but also stands out in the market. The Silver A' Furniture Design Award in 2021 is a well-deserved recognition of their creativity and expertise.
