Food in Nature: Capturing the Beauty of Culinary Art

A Modern Food Photography Project by Duc Bui

Food in Nature is a captivating food photography project created by Duc Bui for Ngoc Suong Seafood & Bar, a modern seafood restaurant in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. This project aims to showcase the restaurant's new fine-dining menu, with each dish telling its own unique story through stunning visuals.

The inspiration behind Food in Nature stems from the idea of how food should be closely connected to Mother Nature. Duc Bui beautifully captures the delicate moment of fragile flowers growing from arid stones, symbolizing survival and growth. The vibrant colors of the flowers and the unique shapes of the stones add a touch of natural beauty to the culinary art.

What sets Food in Nature apart is its ability to create engagement between the brand and its customers. In an ever-evolving landscape of food photography and marketing, this project brings a modern, natural, and contemporary touch to the restaurant's new menu. By incorporating elements of nature, such as flowers and stones, the images evoke a sense of freshness and connection to the origins of culinary art.

The realization of this project involved meticulous attention to detail. Artificial lighting was used to create sparkling reflections from the sea, emphasizing the freshness of the seafood. Duc Bui utilized a Canon 5D Mark IV with a 24-70mm lens for the photoshoot, capturing the essence of each dish. The images were then processed using CaptureOne and retouched in Adobe Photoshop to achieve the desired visual impact.

One of the main challenges faced during the project was finding the perfect stones and flowers to complement the dishes. Additionally, creating appropriate lighting setups to convey the intended ideas required careful planning and execution. However, through thorough research and meticulous preparation, Duc Bui successfully overcame these challenges, resulting in a visually stunning collection of images.

The Food in Nature photoshoot took place over a span of 12 hours, with 3 hours dedicated to setting up different layouts and 9 hours for shooting. The project was completed in September 2020 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Recognized for its excellence, Food in Nature was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Photography and Photo Manipulation category in 2021. This prestigious award acknowledges the project's well-designed, practical, and innovative approach, meeting professional and industrial requirements. It is commended for integrating industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, contributing to a better world through fulfillment and positive emotions.

Food in Nature is a testament to the power of art and design in elevating the dining experience. By seamlessly blending culinary art with the beauty of nature, Duc Bui has created a visual masterpiece that not only showcases the restaurant's new menu but also evokes a sense of wonder and appreciation for the intricate relationship between food and the natural world.
