Small Apartment Design

The inspiration for Colour Temperature Shanghai came from the concept of a blank canvas. By using wave patterns, geometric shapes, and lines as basic structures, designer Yanfei Li transformed this small apartment into a modern and aesthetic space. The design incorporates elements of Memphis design, with color blocks and materials used to divide functional areas.

This project stands out for its ability to combine the living and dining areas within a limited space. Details in the ceilings and floor are used to separate these two functional scenes. For instance, wood and cement are used on the floor to create a visual distinction. In the living room, a U-shaped curtain rail allows the curtains to be placed behind the sofa as a background on regular days. However, when the householder's family or friends come to visit and need to stay over, the curtains can be opened to transform the space into a guest room.

The design of Colour Temperature Shanghai focuses on creating an energetic and relaxed mood while making the space appear larger. Instead of using a rigid structure to divide the space, colors and materials are employed for this purpose. From the living room to the bedroom, a series of cabinets with multifunctional capabilities are made of solid wood. Vibrant colors and non-sharp corners give the apartment a soft touch. The dining room cabinet even features an embedded fireplace, adding a peaceful atmosphere to the area. The integration of colors and design elements perfectly serves the technical purpose of the space.

The technical specifications of the design include an L-shaped bedroom cabinet composed of two parts. The side near the door features two wardrobes and a bookshelf, measuring 1940mm in length, 600mm in width, and 2600mm in height. The other side of the cabinet includes a desk and a small wardrobe, measuring 1500mm in length, 500mm in width, and 2600mm in height. The dining room cabinet measures 1400mm in length, 450mm in width, and 2700mm in height. The embedded fireplace in the dining room cabinet is 1400mm in length, 200mm in depth, and 400mm in height.

Colour, creativity, function, inclusivity, and fun are the keywords that best describe this design. The interaction with the design is seamless, as the space was intentionally improved to enhance functionality. Different colors are used to section off the kitchen and restroom, creating a sense of calm, while warm colors are employed in the living room and bedroom to add vitality to daily life. Artistic decorations are also incorporated to enhance the overall quality of the space.

The Colour Temperature Shanghai project took place from April to September 2020 in Shanghai's Putuo District. The design aimed to create an unadulterated relationship between people and space, allowing individuals to slow down and enjoy their lives in a busy metropolis. The focus was on current and popular sustainability elements, with a simple and functional approach to decoration that improves the quality of life without overconsumption.

The design of Colour Temperature Shanghai faced three main challenges: limited space, multi-functional needs, and personalized aesthetic decoration. With only 54 square meters of usable space, the design team had to carefully arrange the layout to meet the client's needs. Geometric elements and wave patterns were used to decorate the rooms, creating a comfortable and relaxing environment in the fast-paced city of Shanghai.

Colour Temperature Shanghai was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2021. This prestigious award recognizes designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.
