A Total Immersive Experience Designed by Cecconi Simone

The inspiration for Taboo Spa comes from the desire to create a total, immersive environment that is both connected to the surrounding natural landscape and apart from it. The interiors of the spa are designed to be placeless and timeless, absorbing influences from Asia and the Far East. Artwork at key sightlines and the presence of the classical elements - water, fire, wood, and earth - recall the Ontario landscape beyond.

The design of Taboo Spa is characterized by distinct yet continuous areas, defined clearly within the spatial totality. Surface planes in engaging interplay, such as horizontal and vertical, matte and reflective, transparent and opaque, light and dark, create a sense of depth and dimension throughout the space.

The entry/reception area sets the tone for the spa with its 4.5-meter-high ceilings and a cold-rolled steel fireplace as the grounding element. This space incorporates water, fire, wood, and earth, connecting the interior to the natural landscape. The pre-treatment area maintains a connection to the outdoors through semi-sheer window coverings, while retractable curtains provide privacy without partitions.

The "refresh" corridors that connect the treatment areas feature counters in natural stone and custom millwork in pressed laminate for durability and hygiene. The design elements, such as Eastern-influenced screening elements, architectural pendants, artwork, and mirrors, highlight significant sightlines produced by the interior architecture.

Taboo Spa is a testament to the meticulous attention to detail and technical expertise of the design team at Cecconi Simone. The rhythm of repeating millwork elements and the layering of lighting - ceiling, floor, and indirect - add depth and dimension to the space. This design has been recognized for its outstanding creativity and resourcefulness, winning the Bronze A' Design Award in 2014 in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category.
