The Eco Oasis: A Sustainable Residential Interior Design

Creating an Oasis of Light and Greenery

The Eco Oasis is a residential interior design project by Andy Tan that transformed a dark and rundown childcare house into a bright and spacious living space inspired by Mediterranean aesthetics. By incorporating eco-friendly elements and innovative design solutions, this project showcases the possibilities of sustainable living in a residential setting.

The main objective of The Eco Oasis was to maximize natural lighting and create a sense of spaciousness. To achieve this, the ceiling was hacked all the way to the top, exposing the structure of the roof and increasing the overall ceiling height. This not only brightened up the space but also allowed for the entry of ample natural light, giving the interior a carefree and open feel.

A unique feature of The Eco Oasis is the creation of a light well in the center of the house. This light well runs on solar panels and serves as a source of natural light, reducing the need for artificial lighting and minimizing electricity consumption. The addition of greenery further enhances the oasis-like atmosphere, providing a serene and calming environment for the residents to enjoy.

Another notable aspect of the design is the extension of the living quarters and study area through the construction of a mezzanine floor. This was achieved by using a cast iron structure to reinforce the old wooden beams, ensuring the stability and safety of the space. The mezzanine floor also connects to an open roof, providing an outdoor area for barbecues and gatherings.

The Eco Oasis is a prime example of how sustainable design can be seamlessly integrated into a residential interior. By utilizing natural light, solar energy, and greenery, this project not only creates an aesthetically pleasing living space but also reduces the environmental impact of the home. The careful planning and execution of the design resulted in a transformation that maximizes space, functionality, and sustainability.

The Eco Oasis is located in a 3000 sqft shop house in Singapore. The project started in September 2013 and was completed in September 2014. Throughout the design process, extensive research was conducted to ensure the successful integration of eco-friendly elements and the optimization of the surrounding environment.

The Eco Oasis has received recognition for its outstanding design and innovation. It was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2015. This prestigious award acknowledges the project's exceptional expertise, creativity, and technical characteristics, highlighting its commitment to excellence and sustainability.
