The Ark of Future

Private Residence

The Ark of Future is a unique interior design project by Kun Tang that combines the concept of the Space of Flows with the functionality of a private residence. With a focus on creating an open and interactive space, this design provides a seamless blend of aesthetics and practicality.

The inspiration for this design comes from Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's Space of Flows concept. By transforming the space, Kun Tang connects the kitchen, dining room, and living room into a public activity area spanning over 100 square meters. This public space allows for family interaction and gatherings with friends, making it the heart of the home.

One of the key strengths of this design is its ability to cater to the owner's desire for an open public space while ensuring the functionality of a family living area. Kun Tang achieves this by using a semi-partitioned space-cutting method, creating a public area that encourages interaction and offers a transparent view.

The design also incorporates the technique of Chinese painting, enhancing the river landscape outside the window and creating an eye-catching feature. This attention to detail adds a unique touch to the overall aesthetic of the space.

When it comes to the realization of this design, Kun Tang focuses on minimizing the sense of existence of the space through a simple spatial structure and ample blank space. This approach allows for flexibility and adaptability to the changing needs of the owners, providing endless possibilities for enhancing the space.

The materials used in the design, such as cement, wood, and stone, contribute to a simple, natural, and bright atmosphere. By utilizing linear and reflected light sources, the designer creates a natural ambiance that showcases the inherent colors, textures, and qualities of the building materials themselves.

With an indoor area of 188 square meters, The Ark of Future offers a spacious and functional living environment. The design seamlessly integrates the kitchen with other leisure areas, transforming it into a restaurant, bar, tearoom, and rest hall. This integration not only enhances the functionality of the kitchen but also promotes closer communication between family members and creates a fantastic living experience for the residents.

The Ark of Future was completed in October 2020 in Yunyan District, Guiyang City, China. It is a testament to the innovative use of space and the harmonious blend of aesthetics and functionality. This design has been recognized for its excellence and creativity, receiving the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2021.
