Tokinone stands out from other food packages with its vibrant colors and playful shapes. The design incorporates seven different flavors, including butter, strawberry, tangerine, rum, sweet potato, matcha, and hojicha. Each flavor is represented by a distinct color, creating a visually appealing and appetizing experience for consumers.
Unlike traditional Japanese confectionery packaging, Tokinone exudes a colorful, pop, and high-quality atmosphere that makes it perfect for gifting. The packaging is made from non-glossy, recyclable paper, emphasizing the brand's commitment to sustainability and eco-friendliness.
The realization of the Tokinone design required careful consideration of the delicate nature of Dorayaki cakes. Each cake is soft and fragile, so the packaging was specially designed to provide sufficient protection. The boxes are made of non-glossy, high-quality paper that matches the texture of the Dorayaki, creating a cohesive and visually appealing package.
The specifications of the Tokinone packaging include a small box measuring (W)200mm x (D)120mm x (H)105mm, a large box measuring (W)200mm x (D)98mm x (H)235mm, and individual packaging measuring (W)118mm x (D)30mm x (H)138mm. These dimensions were carefully chosen to accommodate the delicate Dorayaki cakes while maintaining a sleek and stylish appearance.
Tokinone is the result of a collaborative effort, with Toshiki Okada leading the design process and Masahito Nunome serving as the brand manager. Together, they created a product that not only captures the essence of traditional Japanese confectionery but also appeals to a modern and international audience.
The design of Tokinone is not only visually appealing but also functional. The colors and shapes chosen for the packaging reflect the rationale behind the flavor selection, creating a cohesive and enticing product. Additionally, the packaging is easily disassembled and folded, making it convenient for consumers and environmentally friendly.
Development of Tokinone began in 2019 in Kawagoe City, Saitama Prefecture, with sales commencing in 2020 at a long-established Japanese confectionery store near Kita-in. The design was specifically tailored to cater to the changing demographics of tourists visiting Kawagoe City, appealing to both young people and foreigners while retaining the essence of Japanese tradition.
Tokinone has received recognition for its outstanding design, winning the Bronze A' Packaging Design Award in 2021. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life. Tokinone's innovative approach to packaging design sets it apart as a truly exceptional product.
Tokinone is not just a food package; it is a celebration of tradition and innovation. With its vibrant colors, playful shapes, and commitment to sustainability, Tokinone is a testament to the enduring appeal of Japanese confectionery in the modern world.
