Light Up 13 Layer Remains

Cultural Heritage Illuminated

The "Light Up 13 Layer Remains" project by Chou Lien - YI.ng Lighting Design rejuvenates the abandoned Shau Nan Dong Refinery, preserving its cultural heritage while integrating it with the surrounding villages.

Taiwan Power Company has embarked on a mission to transform the once-polluted Shua Jin Jiu area into a symbol of art and culture. To achieve this, they enlisted the expertise of international lighting masters, Chou Lien and YI.ng Lighting Design Consultants, to create the "13 Layer Remains" lighting project.

The inspiration behind this design stems from the desire to revive the site as a tribute to Mother Earth and to foster a sense of inclusivity with the neighboring communities. The choice of a 2100K color temperature complements the outer crust of the structure, while amber light represents the fire used during the refining process.

What sets this design apart is its unique luminance strategy. Each level of the structure is illuminated with increasing intensity, highlighting the concept of layers. The foundation is lit with 1 Nit luminance, gradually rising to 6 Nits on the higher levels. This technique not only accentuates the architectural landscape but also outlines the silhouette of the refinery.

The lighting design team meticulously considered the topological features of the site, employing 15 different angles and wattages with a total of 365 sets of luminaires. The use of low color temperature enhances the natural beauty of the vegetation, while a burnishing technique with 3000K lighting brings out its strength.

On the night of the Moon Festival in September 2019, the "Light Up 13 Layer Remains" Public Art Lighting Project was officially unveiled. The dynamic lighting display, lasting 90 seconds, was carefully choreographed to align with the original design concept, expressing the inclusive power of nature.

This project not only showcases the nighttime beauty of the "13 Layer Remains" but also serves as a platform for arts and cultural activities. By repurposing the historical architectural space, it breathes new life into cultural assets and revitalizes polluted land. It has become a venue that nurtures creativity and fosters a deeper appreciation for the area's rich heritage.

The "Light Up 13 Layer Remains" project has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Cultural Heritage and Culture Industry Design category in 2021. This accolade acknowledges its well-designed, practical, and innovative approach, which meets professional and industrial requirements while contributing to a better world.
