BE:SIDE - A Fusion of Cafe and Beauty

Reviving History through Design: Akitoshi Imafuku and Lily Sugiyama's Innovative Concept

BE:SIDE, a new conceptual shop by Akitoshi Imafuku and Lily Sugiyama, combines the charm of a cafe with the allure of a beauty store. Drawing inspiration from the iconic wisteria arbor of Funabashiya, a historic arrowroot mochi store, the designers have created a space that is both unique and deeply rooted in tradition.

The design of BE:SIDE is a testament to the designers' ability to innovate while respecting history. The project, which began in January 2020 and was completed in July 2020, is a modern interpretation of the wisteria arbor that has become a symbol of Funabashiya's flagship store. The designers' decision to incorporate this element into their design is a nod to the store's long history, dating back to 1805, and their commitment to preserving this legacy.

BE:SIDE stands out in the quiet residential area of Aoyama, Japan, with its dynamic entrance design. The wisteria arbor-inspired design not only catches the eye but also serves a practical purpose, functioning as outdoor seating for customers. The dark grey tiles running from the terrace to the end of the store add depth to the space, while the minimalistic interior allows the products to take center stage.

The lighting in the store has been carefully planned to create a bright yet cozy atmosphere. By creating a contrast of light, the designers have ensured that the space is inviting and comfortable, without being too plain or boring. The use of wood in the design adds a touch of warmth and complements the simplicity of the interior.

The design of BE:SIDE has been recognized for its creativity and ingenuity, winning the Bronze A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2021. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate exceptional creativity, technical skill, and a commitment to improving the quality of life.

In conclusion, BE:SIDE is a perfect example of how design can be used to preserve history while pushing the boundaries of innovation. By incorporating elements of a traditional Japanese store into a modern retail space, Akitoshi Imafuku and Lily Sugiyama have created a design that is both unique and deeply respectful of its roots.
