Nu: A Timepiece with an Environmental Statement

Designers Maziar Mohit and Iman Kimiaei Craft a Watch that Speaks Volumes

Unveiling 'Nu', a unique watch design by Maziar Mohit and Iman Kimiaei that not only tells time but also raises awareness about water pollution. This innovative timepiece, inspired by the morning dew and the pristine ocean, is a conversation piece that elegantly conveys a crucial environmental message.

Mohit and Kimiaei's creation, 'Nu', is a watch with a difference. Its dial is filled with water collected from some of the world's most polluted water sources, making it a stark reminder of the urgent need to address environmental issues. The design of the watch is inspired by a water droplet resting on a leaf, with the body shape following the droplet's contour. The blue colour of the watch is a nod to the pristine ocean, highlighting the stark contrast between the ideal and the reality of our water bodies.

The unique properties of 'Nu' lie in its clear acrylic hands, which are almost invisible in the water-filled dial. These hands come to life when the metal body of the watch, acting as a touch-sensitive switch, is touched. An LED beam of light is directed through the hands, causing them to glow within the murky water and show the time. This innovative feature not only adds to the aesthetic appeal of the watch but also serves as a metaphor for the need to shed light on the issue of water pollution.

The watch is crafted with a high-quality steel case topped with domed sapphire glass that has an anti-reflective coating on both sides. The strap is made of all-natural, cruelty-free cactus leather, and the polluted water inside the dial is sterilized using UV. The watch is powered by Swiss Quartz Movement, adding to its precision and reliability.

Creating 'Nu' was not without its challenges. The biggest hurdle for the designers was to create a piece that would subtly yet effectively convey their message. They wanted to talk about water pollution without explicitly doing so, and 'Nu' achieves this by arousing the curiosity of the observer, prompting them to ask questions and engage in a conversation about the issue.

The project, which started in December 2020 in Toronto and concluded in February 2021 in Krakow, has already received recognition for its innovative design and environmental message. 'Nu' was awarded Silver in A' Jewelry, Eyewear, and Watch Design Award in 2021, a testament to its outstanding design and innovation.

In conclusion, 'Nu' is more than just a watch. It is a statement piece that combines innovative design with a powerful environmental message. By drawing attention to the issue of water pollution, designers Maziar Mohit and Iman Kimiaei have created a timepiece that not only tells time but also tells a story.
