Mingniang: A Unique Design for Chinese Baijiu

Combining Tradition and Innovation in Packaging

Mingniang, a health Chinese baijiu under Luzhoulaojiao, has introduced a groundbreaking packaging design that skillfully incorporates the essence of Chinese painting and the principles of wellbeing. Designed by Manling Lin, this innovative packaging aims to convey the ecological greenness and health preservation associated with this unique liquor.

Mingniang stands out from other Chinese baijiu brands with its focus on health and the fusion of tea and wine. Using modern biological enzymolysis technology, Mingniang extracts concentrated tea essence, resulting in a perfect blend of flavors. The packaging design needed to reflect the product's green ecology and health benefits.

The smooth lines of the packaging resemble flowing lake water, while the fragrance of tea is represented through the use of ecological green tones. The design implicitly expresses the image of lake water and tea leaves, creating a visual impression that aligns with the product's tonality and health-focused attributes.

The realization of the Mingniang packaging involves the use of acrylic, self-adhesive, silk screen, glass bottles combined with embedded metal flakes, and a crystal cover. The combination of these materials and techniques creates a visually stunning effect that captures the essence of the product.

One of the challenges faced during the design process was finding a way to convey Chinese traditional culture to the world more effectively. The decision to combine glass with thin metal sheets allowed the designers to break through the traditional expression of liquor packaging. However, the proofing of the back sheet metal required careful adjustments to achieve the perfect shape and combination of materials. Despite the difficulties, this new approach successfully spreads Chinese culture to a global audience.

The Mingniang packaging not only showcases the product but also serves as a work of art. The landscape painting carved on the back of the glass bottle skillfully conveys the oriental charm, creating a mesmerizing effect when light refracts through the bottle. This design also allows for convenient serialization in business, making it an ideal choice for commercial purposes.

The Mingniang packaging design was created between May 2020 and May 2021. It reflects Luzhoulaojiao's commitment to keeping pace with the times and meeting the demands of consumers who prioritize health and wellbeing. By incorporating an ecological green visual impression, this design enhances communication efficiency with consumers and contributes to the overall brand experience.

Manling Lin's Mingniang packaging design was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Packaging Design category in 2021. This prestigious award recognizes designs that demonstrate outstanding creativity, resourcefulness, and technical skills. The Mingniang packaging design stands as a testament to the fusion of art, science, design, and technology, making it a valuable addition to the world of Chinese baijiu.
