The Origami Mask is more than a protective accessory; it's a statement piece that reflects the cultural heritage of Japan. The design was born out of the necessity to wear masks in all social situations, including special celebrations such as weddings. Wada adorned the folds of the mask with gold leaf, transforming it from a necessity into a fashionable accessory suitable for special occasions.
What sets the Origami Mask apart is its unique design process. Instead of gluing or sewing, the mask is formed into a three-dimensional dome using the origami technique of folding a single sheet of paper. The mask is compact when packaged, but expands into a dome shape when both ends are pulled, creating a space around the mouth. This design not only maximizes the charm and functionality of the material but also ensures breathability.
Despite the intricate design, the mask is easy to use. When opened by holding both ends, it becomes dome-shaped, providing ample space around the mouth. When folded, it becomes small and compact, making it easy to carry. The compactness of the mask allows it to be enclosed in invitations for weddings and other parties, adding a unique touch to the event.
The Origami Mask project began around May 2020 and was launched in November of the same year. The masks were distributed at a coming-of-age celebration in a washi production area in January 2021. The design team, which included Art Director Atsushi Morita, Japanese Paper Manufacturing by Hidaka Co., Ltd., and Manufacturing by Cosmotech Inc., faced challenges in mass production due to the complicated manual processing involved. However, by establishing a rule for the folding process, they were able to improve work efficiency and successfully achieve mass production.
Yuriko Wada's Origami Mask is a testament to the power of design in adapting to societal changes. As mask-wearing becomes customary, the need for special masks for special occasions has emerged. The Origami Mask, with its unique blend of tradition and innovation, meets this need while also serving as a symbol of Japanese artistry and craftsmanship.
