Herism: A Jewellery Collection Inspired by Female Power and Self-Determination

Unleashing the Spirit of the Iron Girls

All the design ideas for the Herism jewellery collection are inspired by the working tools used by the 1960s –1970s all-women manual work brigades who helped build the bridges and roads that are the foundations of modern industrialized China. This collection offers new symbols of female power and self-determination, encouraging the contemporary young generation to pursue their personal values bravely.

The Herism jewellery collection, designed by Fan Gao, pays homage to the independent attitude and confident female image of the 1960s – 1970s Chinese "Iron Girls." These women, who were part of the manual work brigades, played a crucial role in the development of modern China. Fan Gao's collection aims to bridge the energy and spirit of these Iron Girls into the new generation of contemporary urban Chinese career women.

What sets the Herism collection apart is not only its unique design but also its commitment to sustainability. Fan Gao leverages technological advances in the manufacturing of Chinese synthetic gemstones and employs innovative setting techniques to emphasize the potential of "green purchase" within the Chinese jewellery industry.

The production process of the Herism collection involves 3D digital modeling, 3D wax printing, casting, model modification, stone setting, and finishing. The materials used include silver with gold plating and lab-grown gemstones. Each piece in the collection showcases the fusion of historical inspiration and modern design.

The Herism collection comprises various pieces, including rings, bracelets, earrings, and a brooch. The dimensions of the rings range from 15mm to 35mm in height, while the bracelet measures 125mm by 30mm. The earrings are 20mm by 18mm, and the brooch measures 70mm by 22mm.

By combining elements from the past and present, the Herism collection creates a powerful and meaningful symbol of female power. The stone setting without prongs and bold shapes evoke the powerful and tough attitude of the Iron Girls, while the flexible chains reflect the multi-social roles of contemporary women. This collection emphasizes the experience and value of the Iron Girls and bridges it with the aspirations of the new generation.

The Herism collection was developed between October 2017 and May 2019 in London. It was exhibited at the Central Saint Martins Degree Show in June 2019 and received the Merit award. In 2020, the collection was invited to participate in the opening exhibition at the An+ Art&Design Museum Shenzhen, "Living Fantasy Young Designer Exhibition," by the China Design Centre. The production of the collection was completed in China.

Fan Gao's research for the Herism collection delved into the historical background of the Chinese Iron Girls and the purchasing behavior of contemporary career women. The research included interviews with Iron Girls, internships at Marie Claire China, case studies, books, journals, online articles, and market data. This extensive research not only informed the development of the project but also ensured its academic rigor.

Despite the challenges faced during the realization of the design details, such as stone setting and soldering the thin chains into the hollow structure, Fan Gao overcame these obstacles through experimentation and perseverance. The result is a collection that reflects the powerful insight of the Iron Girls.

The Herism collection, with its unique design, historical inspiration, and commitment to sustainability, has been recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in the A' Jewelry, Eyewear, and Watch Design category. This prestigious award acknowledges well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements, contributing to a better world.
