Outsiders: A Revolutionary Lighting Performance

Usmanova's Award-Winning Design Sheds Light on Energy Conservation

Nargiza Usmanova, an acclaimed designer, found inspiration for "Outsiders" in a previous lighting project. The initial concept, a caterpillar shining in the dark, evolved into a costume for aliens, symbolizing beings from another planet sharing their knowledge of energy use with humans. This narrative became the backbone of the performance, with the aliens, or "Outsiders," exploring Earth and illuminating their surroundings.

"Outsiders: energy is inside" is a unique lighting performance staged in Oakville, Canada. The performance uses lighting costumes to transform human bodies into illuminated aliens, visualizing the idea that energy is found within us. This concept is not only a cornerstone of our livelihood but may also be key to solving Earth's energy problems.

The performance was brought to life using 116 LED modules, 5,000 red zip-ties, 20 meters of wire, and a portable power station. These materials were used to create the handmade costumes, which were worn by models Victor and Rita Zubashev and Mikhail Palityka. The project was further supported by Maxim Zinchuk, who assisted with photo and video production, and GVA Lighting, who provided technical support.

The performance was staged at three different locations in Oakville, Ontario, Canada, in May 2016. The largest of these performances took place in the Lions Park Valley. The locations were chosen for their uniqueness and the beautiful reflections they provided.

In recognition of its creativity and professional excellence, "Outsiders" was awarded Silver in the A' Performing Arts, Stage, Style, and Scenery Design Award in 2021. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill, and that evoke positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
