Zenstay: A Harmonious Blend of Tradition and Innovation

Shengzhe Shen's Award-Winning Design Breathes New Life into Old Stone Houses

Shengzhe Shen's Zenstay Boutique Hotel, a unique blend of traditional and modern architecture, offers an immersive experience on Dongji Island, China. The design, which won the Silver A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2022, is a testament to the power of adaptive renovation and sustainable design.

Shen's design was inspired by the rustic island culture and the beauty of years, as reflected in the local stone houses that have weathered time and elements. The design's entry points were the "local dwelling" and "natural texture," which Shen used as a foundation to create a space that caters to both traditional culture and modern experience.

The Zenstay Boutique Hotel stands out for its unique approach to reconstruction. While preserving the original stone-timber structure, Shen inserted novel white blocks to establish continuity between detached public spaces. The atrium and staircase offer a smooth transition between the old and new, reinforcing the harmony and stability of the place.

The hotel was built using a variety of materials, including concrete, local ashlar, red block, old larch wood, used grey tiles, stucco, and soil stabilizer. The construction was carried out by local builders, further rooting the project in the local culture and environment. The hotel covers an area of 733 square meters and includes nine sea view guest rooms, a restaurant, a sober bar, a conference room, and a full viewing multifunctional platform.

Shen's design is a testament to the power of adaptive renovation, interventional reconstruction, and sustainable design. The Zenstay Boutique Hotel is more than just a place to stay; it's a cultural enclave that reflects the past while embracing the future. It's a place where natural, traditional, and postmodern elements coexist in harmony.

The project, which started in April 2017 and finished in February 2019, faced several challenges. From the lack of large construction machinery and vehicles to bad weather and goods shortage, Shen and his team had to rely on folk wisdom and design strategy to bring their vision to life. Despite these challenges, they managed to preserve the traditional houses' details and unique living experience while introducing modern materials and local craft.

In conclusion, Shengzhe Shen's Zenstay Boutique Hotel is a shining example of how design can breathe new life into old structures. By preserving the original fabric of the stone houses and introducing innovative elements, Shen has created a space that is both respectful of its past and ready for the future. This project serves as an inspiration for designers and architects worldwide, demonstrating the power of sustainable design and cultural preservation.
