Amore: Elevating Performing Art to New Heights

An Avant-Garde Production by Chia-Hui Lu

Love, the most seductive and touching of all emotions, has always been a muse for artists. In the case of Chia-Hui Lu, love serves as the inspiration for his groundbreaking project, Amore. This unique production aims to unite the seven human emotions and the five Eastern elements through a diverse program of Western classical music and performing art. With its avant-garde approach, Amore promises to be a truly immersive and captivating experience.

Amore stands out from other performances with its innovative blend of performing, conceptual, kinetic, digital, video, and abstract art. The foundation of this production lies in the paintings of Paul Chiang, which are brought to life through 3D animation techniques. The combination of intense piano repertoires, multimedia technology, and contemporary moving art creates a banquet for the senses, showcasing diverse styles and evoking a range of emotions.

The repertoire for Amore includes renowned compositions such as Chopin's 4 Ballades, Liszt's Liebestraume No.3, and Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet. Additionally, Chia-Hui Lu's own compositions, Butterfly Orchid and Tango, add a personal touch to the performance. These musical pieces, combined with Paul Chiang's selected paintings, including Song Without Words and Imagination of Lotus, create a harmonious fusion of sound and visuals.

Amore comes to life through a live performance on a Steinway Piano at the National Taiwan Concert Hall. The stage is transformed into a canvas for an animation film projected overhead, created using Maya and After Effects. The film, presented in DCP format, adds another layer of visual storytelling to the performance, enhancing the overall experience for the audience.

Creating Amore was not without its challenges. Pairing and synchronizing animations with music, and debuting the production in a live concert setting, required meticulous planning and execution. However, the result is a unique performing art that touches the heart and leaves a lasting impression.

Amore made its debut at Art Taipei in October 2019 and has since been revised and refined. The latest edition of the performance was completed in April 2021, with a runtime of approximately one hour and twelve minutes. This captivating production continues to captivate audiences with its timeless themes and innovative approach.

Amore has garnered recognition for its creative ingenuity and outstanding design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Performing Arts, Stage, Style, and Scenery Design category in 2022. This prestigious accolade celebrates designs that showcase technical and creative excellence, contributing to improvements in quality of life and making the world a better place.

Amore is a testament to the power of love and its ability to inspire art. Through its unique blend of music, animation, and performance, it offers a transformative experience that transcends boundaries and touches the soul. Chia-Hui Lu's vision and dedication have brought forth a truly remarkable production that pushes the boundaries of what performing art can be.
