Inspired by the harmony between nature and fashion, designer Khajornsak Nakpan introduces Bio Melanin, a groundbreaking textile substitute made from soil bacteria. This innovative material not only showcases the potential of sustainable production but also celebrates diversity and self-expression through its unique melanin pigments.

Thailand-based designer Khajornsak Nakpan embarked on a mission to explore the possibilities of soil as a textile material, driven by the urgent need to respond to climate change and maximize the value of natural resources. The Bio Melanin project aims to create a sustainable future by harnessing the power of nature.

The key strength of Bio Melanin lies in its production process, which ensures zero waste. By synthesizing bio-fibers and melanin from soil bacteria, Nakpan has created a material that mimics human skin tones, specifically those found in Thailand. This groundbreaking research opens up new avenues for sustainable fashion, where aesthetics and self-esteem can be enhanced through innovative materials.

The realization of Bio Melanin involves a clean production technology that avoids the generation of toxic substances or environmental pollution. The material is biodegradable and friendly to the human body, making it a responsible choice for conscious consumers. The dimensions of the Bio Melanin garments and ornaments are approximately 60 x 120 x 100 cm and 72 x 140 x 23 cm, respectively. These sizes reflect Nakpan's commitment to creating designs that are both visually striking and environmentally conscious.

By integrating scientific experimentation and bioscience technology, Bio Melanin represents a paradigm shift in garment design. The Bio Melanin project was carried out in Thailand from August 2018 to April 2021. It has garnered international recognition, with exhibitions in museums and galleries across Thailand, China, Spain, Romania, and the USA. Additionally, it has been published in prestigious academic conferences and journals, including Pratt Institute (New York), University of Montreal (Mexico), Falling Wall LAB (Germany), and Ewha Womans University (Korea).

Khajornsak Nakpan's research on soil as a textile substitute material aligns with the urgent need for environmentally friendly development and growth.
