Symbolink: A Mythological Book Design

Archiving Global Beliefs Through Symbols

To ease the tension derived from the global pandemic issue, Yoonbee Baek conceived Symbolink, a series of books that archives imaginations derived from common symbols. Each book in the series represents worldwide symbols and conveys the intuitive connection between global beliefs.

Symbols are the clue to the relationship between the world and human beings, forming the basis of every culture. Symbolink, designed by Yoonbee Baek, is a unique collection of books that captures the essence of common symbols from around the world. The series consists of three books, each dedicated to a specific symbol: the Celestial Tree, Water and Fire, and Door and Key. Through mythology, traditional stories, art, and craft from diverse nations, Symbolink showcases the intuitive connection between global beliefs.

What sets Symbolink apart is its focus on the universal language of symbols. The books serve as an archive of artifacts derived from common objects, offering a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of different societies. The design team, led by Yoonbee Baek, meticulously researched the historical significance of symbols and their influence on various regions.

The realization of Symbolink required a combination of traditional and modern printing techniques. The designers aimed to maximize the sublime of time by incorporating textures reminiscent of old paper processing, undeciphered letters, and interpretations of tradition. The result is a visually stunning print that captures the essence of each symbol and its historical context.

The Symbolink series measures 110mm in width and 210mm in height, with each book offering a unique exploration of a specific symbol. The design team, led by Yoonbee Baek, meticulously crafted the layout and typography to create an immersive reading experience. The project was completed in Seoul, Korea, and was exhibited at the Ewha Womans University Graduate Exhibition in June 2021.

Symbolink not only showcases the beauty and diversity of global symbols but also highlights their intuitional affordance and the profound impact they have on human psychology. By delving into the depths of symbolism, Symbolink invites readers to explore the shared beliefs and cultural connections that unite us all.

Symbolink has received recognition for its exceptional design and innovative approach. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Print and Published Media Design category in 2022. This prestigious award is given to designs that meet professional and industrial requirements, integrating industry best practices and competent technical characteristics. Symbolink's unique concept and execution contribute to a better world by fostering understanding and appreciation for global cultural heritage.
