Yatsugatake Villa: A Modern Retreat in Harmony with Nature

Blending Tradition and Innovation

Situated in Hokuto-City, Yamanashi, Japan, the Yatsugatake Villa is a stunning example of architectural design that seamlessly integrates with its natural surroundings. Designed by Kiyotoshi Mori and Natsuko Kawamura, this residence showcases a unique blend of traditional Japanese craftsmanship and modern innovation.

The Yatsugatake Villa stands out with its distinctive exterior, characterized by three trapezoid tubes that create a fan-like shape. This design not only adds visual interest but also serves a functional purpose. The tubes frame the landscape in all four directions, offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountain ranges and fields.

One of the key features of the design is the careful consideration of the sun's movement and the thermal environment. The roof extends to block direct sunlight during the summer, while the side walls keep the western sun out. This results in a series of tubular forms that create a play of light and shadow within the interior spaces.

When closed, the shoji paper screens fill the rooms with soft, diffused light, creating a serene atmosphere reminiscent of traditional Japanese culture. However, when opened, the screens reveal the majestic scenery framed by the walls, providing a seamless connection between the indoors and outdoors.

Despite its contemporary design, the Yatsugatake Villa incorporates traditional Japanese wooden construction methods. The earthquake-resistant walls and large openings are built using time-honored techniques, ensuring both structural integrity and a connection to the vernacular architecture of the region.

The design of the Yatsugatake Villa prioritizes the interaction between the building and its environment. In the winter, the fan-shaped layout maximizes sunlight exposure, creating warm and inviting spaces. In contrast, during the summer, the roof and walls block the strong sun rays, creating shaded areas within the house. Windows strategically placed in the north and south walls allow cool breezes to flow through, maintaining a comfortable and airy atmosphere.

The Yatsugatake Villa was not without its challenges. Finding skilled carpenters capable of constructing the intricate wooden elements proved to be a hurdle. However, through the use of traditional materials such as Japanese cedar and plastering techniques, the design team was able to create a space that seamlessly combines modern aesthetics with traditional craftsmanship.

With its harmonious integration of design, nature, and traditional Japanese elements, the Yatsugatake Villa is a testament to the ingenuity and creativity of Kiyotoshi Mori and Natsuko Kawamura. This exceptional residence has been recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in 2022, showcasing its contribution to the improvement of quality of life through its innovative and thoughtful design.
